Application Deadline:  seventeenth June 2026 – 23:59 CET 

Applications at the moment are open for the 2026 French Agency for Development (AFD) Digital Energy Challenge. The 2026 Digital Energy Challenge Call for Projects invites revolutionary SMEs to apply in a single or each of the next classes

  • Partnership for a collaborative mission in Nigeria, developed with the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC)
  • Tech Accelerator for revolutionary digital tasks in one of many 51 specified international locations in Africa

Requirements

The 2026 Call for Projects is open to revolutionary SMEs that:

  • Employ fewer than 250 individuals and have a turnover of lower than €50M
  • Are impartial (possession standards apply)*
  • Have a robust R&D part* 
  • Have no battle of curiosity with AEDC

While firms from world wide are invited to apply, proposals from native African firms are strongly inspired and can obtain beneficial consideration. 

Project eligibility

Projects should:

  • Be digital by nature (software program, knowledge, telecom, cloud-based know-how and many others.)
  • Demonstrate innovation (new or tailored to native context)
  • Include a transparent R&D dimension
  • Address the 2026 thematic priorities
  • Be past ideation stage (already piloted)
  • Be implementable inside 12 months
  • Not rely on regulatory modifications

Additional standards:

  • Tech Accelerator: the mission should happen in an eligible African nation (see record beneath).
  • Partnership: the mission should happen in Nigeria with AEDC

The Digital Energy Challenge Call for Projects 2026 helps tasks within the following international locations:

Algeria, Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burundi, Cabo Verde, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Democratic Republic of Congo, Republic of Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, Djibouti, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Gabon, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Libya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritania, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Benefits

A complete finances of €827K might be allotted to chose tasks to develop, check and implement revolutionary digital and AI-enabled options. 

Winners profit from:

  • grants to contribute to prices for gear, software program, services or products and coaching, in addition to knowledgeable help for mission administration.
    • Up to €400K (Partnership) 
    • Up to €150K (Tech Accelerator) 
  • Expert help and bootcamp for hand-on steerage, sector insights and collaboration Opportunities between mission winners and African utilities
  • Visibility and networking via communication campaigns piloted by AFD and entry to the Digital Energy Community

Themes

The themes of the 2 classes are structured round three precedence areas that symbolize widespread challenges for AEDC and a number of other African utilities: optimizing planning and investments, integrating knowledge from mini-grids, and bettering community operations. In this context, the chosen themes are: 

  • Product 1: Grid Planning and Investment Optimization
  • Product 2: Microgrid and DER Management Platform
  • Product 3: Data Platform and Integrated Network Visibility
