Call for Applications: PhD Scholarships under the EU-Funded Pamoja Tuhifadhi Bahari Yetu Project

The Pamoja Tuhifadhi Bahari Yetu (Bahari Yetu) mission is inviting functions for seven (7) totally funded PhD scholarships in the fields of marine and coastal conservation. Funded by the European Union, this chance is open to Tanzanian nationals solely, and goals to strengthen nationwide analysis capability in environmental and climate-related domains. Selected fellows will play a key position in shaping Tanzania’s sustainable marine, forest, and local weather insurance policies by means of high-impact doctoral analysis.

Overview of Scholarship Programme

• Total Scholarships Available: 7

• Location: Hosted by native universities in Tanzania

• Target Group: Tanzanian nationals, particularly employees from public establishments managing marine and coastal assets

• PhD Duration: 36 months

• Expected Completion: By September 2028

• Age Limit: Applicants should be 35 years or youthful by September 2025

PhD Research Themes and Positions

1. Marine Plastics Waste Management (1 place)

• Focus on plastic waste assortment, recycling, waste-to-energy options

• Conduct Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) to guage emissions

• Explore round and blue economic system insurance policies and GHG mitigation

2. Marine Ecology / Biology (1 place)

• Research local weather change impacts on marine ecosystems

• Study genetic variety and inhabitants connectivity

• Assess effectiveness of MPAs and OECMs

• Model invasive species unfold and marine species migration

3. Coastal Forest Ecology (1 place)

• Monitor deforestation, afforestation, and carbon shares utilizing UAVs, AI, and distant sensing

• Soil carbon modeling and real-time monitoring for MRV techniques

• Contribute to sustainable land administration selections

• AFOLU (Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use):

  • Methane emissions from livestock and manure administration

  • Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) and simulation modelling

  • Economic and coverage evaluation for emission discount

• Energy Sector:

  • Factors affecting biomass renewability

  • Demand and provide modelling for biomass vitality

  • Refining fNRB under UNFCCC frameworks

• IPPU (Industrial Processes and Product Use):

• Waste Sector:

  • Emission elements from landfills, composting, waste-to-energy

  • Use of AI and MRV for waste monitoring

  • Develop round economic system methods by means of LCA comparisons

Offers of the Bahari Yetu Project

Selected candidates will obtain:

• 36-month stipend, aligned with their host college’s stipend construction

• Tuition payment protection for 36 months, based on college coverage

• Up to TZS 20,000,000 to assist analysis actions

• Modest assist for publications and analysis dissemination

Note: Continued funding is conditional on profitable defence of the PhD proposal and optimistic annual progress studies.

Scholarship Conditions

Applicants should:

• Register as a PhD scholar at a related native college

• Join and adjust to insurance policies of the Doctoral School or Institute concerned

• Commit to attending mission conferences and presenting analysis updates

• Complete the PhD by September 2028

• Be 35 years or youthful by September 2025
