Yale Young African Scholars (YYAS) is a rigorous academic and enrichment program intended for high school students in Africa with aspirations of pursuing further education and becoming influential young leaders on the continent.

Participants in both programs will improve their academic performance, get advice on applying for financial help and admission to universities, and connect with young African leaders through a network. Students will be matched with mentors who will assist and counsel them throughout the university admission process after the programme.

While applications from all qualified students are welcome, please be aware that our admissions committee will give priority to high-achieving, low-income (or “HALI”) students who do not have access to university assistance in their communities or schools.

YYAS plans to provide both a residential programme and an online programme starting in 2024. Participation in any programme is free of tuition

Online YYAS Workshop:

Admission to the YYAS Workshop is available to students from all African countries, with a capacity of approximately 200. For the length of the programme, students must be able to access Zoom and Canvas on their own computer, tablet, or mobile phone with dependable internet.

The program’s main objectives are assisting students in exploring their career options, getting ready for college applications, and navigating the transfer from high school to college. YYAS features rigorous attendance requirements, where students are not allowed to miss even a single day of the programme due to its short duration. After completing the programme successfully, students will receive a YYAS Certificate of Completion in PDF format, which they can use on their college and university applications. The YYAS Workshop is available online at no cost at all.

Zimbabwean residence for the YYAS Summit:

Admission to the YYAS Summit will be available to about 120 students, who can come from any country in Africa. For ten (10) days, students will live on a residential school campus in Zimbabwe. The programme will cover leadership, innovation, design, and 21st century skills in addition to the same college readiness subjects covered in the online workshop. YYAS features rigorous attendance requirements, where students are not allowed to miss even a single day of the programme due to its short duration. After completing the programme successfully, students will receive a YYAS Certificate of Completion in PDF format, which they can use on their college and university applications. In addition to offering free housing, meals, and all academic curriculum materials, the YYAS Summit has no tuition.

Travel Award:

All students must be able to travel to and from Zimbabwe for the YYAS Summit (which is a residential event), and they must arrange for, pay for, and raise the necessary funds for any necessary travel documents (passport, travel visa, etc.).

For students who are offered admission and reside outside of Zimbabwe, there are a restricted amount of need-based Travel Grants available for transportation (such as flights). Each offer of admission for the YYAS Summit will include information about whether or not a travel grant was awarded (students and families may then choose whether to accept or decline that offer of admission). All applicants will automatically be evaluated for eligibility for travel grants.

It is required of all students who do not get or qualify for a travel grant to arrange, pay for, or collect money for their own transportation to and from Zimbabwe.

YYAS & YYGS Application | Yale Young African Scholars (YYAS)

For more information about YYGS and YYAS, please visit our Yale Programs for African Students webinar(link is external) to register and view the recording in your browser.

Yale Young African Scholars (YYAS) is a sister program to YYGS, and is designed for secondary students on the African continent. If you are interested in applying for both YYAS and YYGS, please take the following steps:

1) Submit the application for the program that you are most interested in (YYGS application or YYAS application*).

2) If you apply to YYGS, at the end of the application there is a section for you to indicate your interest in applying to the YYAS Program, too.

If you apply to YYAS, at the beginning of the application there is a section for you to indicate your interest in applying to the YYGS Program, too.

3) That’s it! By indicating your secondary interest, you will automatically be considered for both programs. After YYGS and YYAS applications are thoroughly reviewed, applicants will receive one offer of admission to either YYAS or YYGS.

Please Note: You can only create one application. Our system only recognizes one application, so if you create separate applications for each program, it’s likely your admissions decision will not be released and you will risk losing your chance for a spot in either program.
