Cullman Center Fellowship

Deadline: June 2024 applications | Cullman Center Fellowship

Fellowships are available from the Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers to individuals whose work would directly benefit from access to the research collections housed at the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building located at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street. The Library is one of the best places in the world to study anthropology, art, geography, history, languages and literature, philosophy, politics, popular culture, psychology, religion, sociology, sports, and urban studies. It is renowned for the remarkably extensive scope of its holdings.

Hillis, Faith”The Cullman Center is a scholar’s dream come true: it provides the solitude, comfort, and tools a dedicated researcher needs to do her work while fostering the interpersonal relationships that expand her mind and improve her quality of life. I am going back home renewed and invigorated after the most contented, fruitful, and nurturing year of my life.” —Faith Hillis, 2018–2019 Fellow

Standards and Terminologies

Outstanding researchers and authors—academics, independent scholars, journalists, creative writers (novelists, playwrights, poets), translators, and visual artists—are given fifteen Fellowships annually by the Cullman Center Selection Committee. English-speaking foreign nationals are encouraged to apply. Applicants for the Fellowship must work primarily at the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building, not at other Library divisions. Those who are looking to sponsor research that will directly result in a degree are not qualified.

The Cullman Center is in search of exceptional writing. It seeks to foster vibrant discourse on literature and research at the highest caliber within the Center, in open venues across the Library, and in the published works of the Fellows.

A Cullman Center Fellow is granted full access to the physical and electronic resources of the Library, a computerized office, and a stipend of up to $85,000. During the Fellowship term, which runs from September to May, fellows are employed by the Center. During lunch, each Fellow addresses the other Fellows and the public about his or her ongoing work in progress.

The application date for the Cullman Center Fellowship for 2024–2025 has passed. Kindly check for the 2025–2026 application in June 2024.
