  • Financed: $20–$50,000
  • Opens annually on August 1st
  • Deadline: Every year on November 15

Since 1917, there have been international fellowships. The program offers assistance to non-citizens and permanent residents of the United States who wish to pursue full-time graduate or postdoctoral studies in the United States with the goal of returning home to pursue professional careers. Women who are members of Graduate Women International (see the list of GWI affiliates) may be eligible for a restricted number of prizes for study abroad (excluding the applicant’s home country). Support is provided for graduate and postgraduate study at recognized American universities.

By the application deadline, applicants must have applied to the schools of study they have chosen and obtained the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in the United States. Recipients are chosen based on their academic success as well as their track record of supporting women and girls.

Recipients go back to their home nations to assume leadership roles in industry, politics, academia, the arts, science, and community action.

  • The AAUW does not allow current interns or members of its board of directors, committees, panels, task forces, or staff to apply for grants or fellowships. A holder of an award is qualified to run for office or be appointed to task forces, committees, panels, and boards.
