Eligibility
- DAAD/AGI Research Fellows will be required to write a brief analytical essay that will be posted on the AGI website and disseminated through the Institute’s targeted analysis newsletter, The AGI Advisor, as well as present their research findings at a workshop to the larger Washington, DC, policy community during their tenure.
- Those working in academic institutions, think tanks, and public policy and research organisations that specialise in transatlantic relations-related fields—policy, politics, economics, law, education, social sciences, and humanities—are encouraged to apply to AGI. Individuals of the following nationalities, in addition to Germans, are eligible for the fellowship:
- Foreign (non-German) doctoral candidates, junior academics, and academics who are permanently residing in Germany; German nationals pursuing doctorates;
- Doctoral candidates from Germany and abroad, junior researchers, and scholars at the network centres of the DAAD Centres for German and European Studies outside of the US that are supported now or in the past.
Requirements
- Candidates must be German or non-German individuals employed either continuously in Germany or at one of the DAAD Centres for German and European Studies located outside of the US.
- Candidates must to be either junior or senior in rank. A PhD must have been completed or be under progress for junior applicants.
- To be considered for fellowships within the allotted time, all application materials MUST be submitted in English and received by AGI by the deadline.
- Applicants are ineligible if they have obtained a grant or other form of assistance from the DAAD within three years of the fellowship’s commencement. Applicants connected to the DAAD Centres for German and European Studies are exempt from this.
Application
An official application form does not exist. Please electronically send the following materials (in English) as one PDF file in order to apply for the DAAD/AGI fellowship programme:
- A brief letter of introduction in which you should specify your citizenship, eligibility, and source of information regarding the fellowship;
- A curriculum vitae including, if applicable, a list of publications;
- A project proposal (5-7 pages, double-spaced) that clearly and succinctly outlines the research’s main points and how it relates to AGI’s mission, the rationale behind the project’s execution at AGI and in Washington, DC, and the duration of the fellowship (two or four months) at AGI. An explanation of the applicant’s motivations for choosing to visit a certain DAAD centre should be supplied, as the fellowship offers funding for travel to DAAD centres in North America.
- For PhD candidates and recent PhD recipients (i.e., those awarded within the last five years), two recent letters of recommendation are required.
- English language proficiency is a requirement for acceptance.
- A screening committee will analyse the applications, and after a few candidates are chosen, AGI will interview them in person or by video conference.
