The program’s goal is to enable successful awardees to concentrate on completing a significant piece of research, with a special emphasis on those who have been unable to focus on research because of other obligations.

Programme Specifics

  • There is no coverage for these awards under the Full Economic Costing (FEC) framework. The only expenses that will need to be paid are the salary of a replacement lecturer, who should ideally be in the early stages of their career and hired at the standard starting salary for first-time appointments.
  • Other costs include limited research expenses up to a maximum of £5,000 and associated employers’ costs of NI and USS (and London Allowance, if applicable).
  • The British Academy and the Leverhulme Trust are not able to cover any additional expenditures associated with these Fellowships, whether they are directly incurred, allocated, or indirect. It is permitted to apply for a BA/Leverhulme Small Research Grant programme concurrently, as long as the project is the same, and to retain both awards if both schemes are successful—as long as there are no overlaps in expenditures. Fellowships are available for one year, beginning on September 1, 2024, and ending on January 1, 2025.

Eligibility

  • The Academy determines eligibility for these awards without considering the age of the applicant or their existing status (e.g., Lecturer, Professor). Instead, it is anticipated that recipients of awards will be able to share the findings of their work not only through publications but also by incorporating them into their post-award academic careers.
  • Support is appropriate for any humanities and social science topic of study. Candidates must also be employed by UK institutions.

Application

  • The Grant Management System (GMS), Flexi-Grant®, of the British Academy must be used to submit applications online.
