In order to encourage doctoral degree completion and to advance next generation social science research in Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda, the Next Generation Social Sciences Research Council is financing three different types of fellowships. The fellowships fund dissertation research on issues related to development, security, and peace.

In June 2011, the Next Generation Social Sciences programme was introduced as a remedy for the lack of experienced professors in African higher education. Fellowships are offered by the Next Generation Social Sciences in Africa programme to support the intellectual growth and retention of early-career professors in Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda.
The fellowships for Next Generation Social Sciences are:
- Fellowship for Doctoral Dissertation Research
- Fellowship for Doctoral Dissertation Proposals
- completing a doctoral dissertation fellowship
- The doctorate dissertation research fellowship provides funding for up to $15,000 in dissertation research expenses over a period of 6 to 12 months for a topic connected to peace, security, and development.
Benefits
- The honorarium for fellows is around $10,000.
eligibility
Each applicant must:
- Possess a master’s degree and be residents of a country in sub-Saharan Africa.
- Be registered in a PhD programme at a university in Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, or Uganda that has been granted accreditation.
- A dissertation research proposal that has been approved
- The programme encourages women to apply and works to increase diversity.
Selection Standards for Next Generation Social Sciences In Africa Doctoral Dissertation Fellowships 2024
- A strong proposal will provide brief and clear explanations of the project and its importance.
- The proposals should show that the authors have a solid understanding of both the methodology and pertinent social scientific literature that will be used in the project.
- Additionally, applicants must show that all suggested operations can be carried out successfully and on schedule.
- An unbiased, multinational committee of top academics from many fields of social science will assess all ideas according to these standards.
- Developing Social Sciences Fellows are expected to participate in two SSRC-sponsored workshops each year that are designed to assist junior academics in the production of scholarly publications.
- Each year, we plan to give out up to 45 fellowships in total, spanning all categories.
