The goal of the internship programme is to give students a pre-professional, worthwhile, and useful work experience in a field linked to their studies or career interests. Internships may be available in one of Brookings’ central business units, such as Human Resources, Executive Office, Finance, Development, Facilities, or Communications, or in one of the institute’s research programmes, such as Governance Studies, Global Economy and Development, Brookings Metro, Economic Studies, or Foreign Policy.

The kind of labour varies depending on the internship role and could involve communications, administrative, or research assignments, among other things.
Interns at Brookings are integrated into the company’s daily operations. In addition to the learning opportunities specifically selected for the intern cohort, they are also encouraged to participate in internal and external events, local networking opportunities, social and community programming, staff professional development, and may even join employee-led professional networks and affinity groups. All open internships, when available, are listed here.

INTERNSHIPS

  • All interns at Brookings are compensated, either directly by Brookings or through an external partnership1 that is planned ahead of time.
  • The usual 12-week internship might be either hybrid (located in the Washington, DC, metropolitan area; required at least one day in office based on the schedule of the research programme or business unit) or remote.
  • The period of the internship must be spent physically in the United States.

NOTE: The following states: Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Michigan, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Washington are NOT acceptable locations for remote interns to work from.

ELIGIBILITY

Internships at Brookings are available to:
