obligations and responsibilities

The key duties of the health specialist include, but are not limited to:

  • Help with the preparation of a few chosen national and/or regional operations as part of the Bank’s HNP operational portfolio execution in HAEH1. This would entail taking part in technical discussions and regularly evaluating the Bank portfolio in close coordination with the pertinent governmental entities and development partners;
  • co-lead and participate in HAEH1 projects requiring superior analytical and consulting services;
  • Take part in and make a contribution to technical assistance work supporting pertinent capacity-building events, such as workshops and seminars;
  • Participate in and contribute to the policy conversation with other key stakeholders and colleagues in government, especially at the national and sub-national levels;
  • assist teams in establishing and maintaining alliances and networks with external partners as well as within the Bank (in HNP and other areas);
  • Sector/country briefings, background reports, portfolio performance evaluations, etc. are a few examples of operational products/outputs that you can contribute to that are sector-specific or cross-sectoral;
  • sector-specific or cross-sectoral policy and other materials are reviewed and contributed to;
  • organize health team missions and take part in them;
  • ad hoc information requests from both internal and external parties are complied with;
  • carry out any additional tasks necessary for the portfolio of health and human capital;
  • The Practice Manager (Health Nutrition and Population) for Eastern and Southern Africa (HAEH1) will receive reports from the health specialist. The Health Specialist will assist Task Team Leaders on assigned duties for day-to-day operational work and collaborate closely with other Task Team Leaders and the Human Development Program Leader. The Health Specialist shall be governed by all rules and policies that apply to employees of the World Bank.

Selection Standards

  • It is necessary to have a master’s degree or higher in public health, population, nutrition, and related fields, as well as 5 to 8 years’ worth of relevant professional experience working on public health and/or health care delivery initiatives. It would be advantageous to have experience in digital health, adolescent health, and climate and health.
  • a track record of meeting deadlines, adhering to high standards for work products, prioritizing tasks within their work schedule, and collaborating with team members to produce goods of the highest level.
  • demonstrated capacity for strategic thought and quick information analysis from a variety of sources.
  • The capacity to create documents on complex issues, speak and write convincingly, and communicate ideas succinctly require excellent oral and written communication abilities.
  • Collaboration skills that have been shown in a multicultural setting.
  • An advantage is having knowledge of WBG operations, policies, and procedures as well as experience working on projects sponsored by the WBG.
  • It is advantageous to have prior African work experience.
  • In addition to the aforementioned, the chosen candidate must exhibit the following WBG key competencies: Integrative Capabilities understands the fundamental difficulties and knows where to turn for more help when necessary.
  • Knowledge and Experience in the Development Field — Recognizes the role played by the health sector in the formulation of public policy. is able to research pertinent information, look into related policy issues across several locations, and then distill for customers ideas and lessons that are operationally pertinent from this study.
  • Skills in Policy Dialogue — identifies and evaluates policy issues, and then conveys conclusions and points of view orally and in written and verbal economic reports and papers. participates actively in discussions with the government and/or other stakeholders while working with Bank teams.
  • Client-Oriented — Maintains client connections in the face of competing requests or directives and offers solutions and advice that are supported by evidence and based on accurate diagnosis.
  • Drive for Results — Identifies the resources required to complete tasks involving various stakeholders and works to resolve issues that are preventing critical deliverables from happening.
  • Teamwork (collaboration) and inclusion — Demonstrates leadership by ensuring the team maintains its focus and organization and by actively seeking out and taking into account a variety of viewpoints.
