The tasks of the Social Media Manager are as follows: The Social Media Manager is under the general supervision of the Senior Social Media Officer stationed in New York, with a dotted line to the External Relations Officer of the Goodwill Ambassador Section (GWA).

Planning & Strategy:

  • Assistance with social media strategy, content creation, and distribution on UNHCR channels and external platforms in relation to the work of UNHCR Goodwill Ambassadors, prominent backers, digital influencers, celebrities, and other talent.

Creation of Original Content:

  • Write, publish, and develop engaging English-language social media material tailored to certain platforms in relation to the actions of GWAs, prominent backers, backers of refugees, and online influencers.
  • Create original content projects with the team’s other content creators, GWA, and Social.
  • Create and edit social media videos, Reels, and TikTok videos in respect to GWAs and well-known supporters.
  • Coordinate complex video edits with the Social Video Editor of the Social Media Section and outside video editors of the GWA Section, creating concise creative briefs and timetables.
  • Visuals with a focus on GWAs and well-known supporters.
  • Support content collection missions with GWAs/high profile supporters and create made-for-social content for both GWA/high profile supporter accounts and global UNHCR accounts.
  • Participate in UNHCR’s refugee-led narrative strategy by seeking out and taking advantage of chances to co-create content with GWAs and prominent backers.
  • Create specialized social media messaging and packages for GWA/high-profile supporter accounts for important UNHCR campaigns, content, and events.
  • Look for possibilities to translate and adapt relevant material into other languages during the content production process.
  • Ensure that social media platforms and content adhere to a high level of message and branding consistency.
  • Assist with developing the editorial voice and style of UNHCR on social media, closely collaborating with team members.

Teamwork:

  • Cooperate closely with GWA officers to ensure that all social media strategies are completely incorporated into larger strategic plans and talent activities, such as field missions, events, and campaigns.
  • Cooperate on digital influencer engagement and communication with the manager of digital influencer engagement.
  • Work together on content creation and brainstorming with other Social Media Section members.

Reporting and Analysis:

  • Work closely with the GWA section and Analytics Unit to analyze social media activity in support of UNHCR and/or refugees and to produce impact reports.
  • Make suggestions for how to enhance GWA-related social media activities and content.
  • Provide weekly analysis of social media trends and material from GWA and high-profile supporters.

Management of the community and audience growth:

  • Performing routine community management tasks, such as comment monitoring and response, audience sentiment analysis, and feedback gathering, on owned channels as well as on GWA/external partner platforms to promote engagement with target audiences and existing and new fanbases.
  • Making efforts to maintain the audience growth on UNHCR’s five primary social media accounts, particularly on X, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and TikTok.

Social listening and crisis management

  • Keep an eye on any current or emerging crisis communications situations involving our Goodwill Ambassadors and other talent on social media. This includes doing routine listening and community management tasks as well as proactively assessing risk on supporter channels in order to advise and report upward.

Within-Company Communications:

  • As needed, inform other team members and the Social Media Section about the intentions for GWA-related content on UNHCR and supporter channels as well as the reverse.

To GWA focus points, distribute social media bundles.

Training:

  • Offer members of the Goodwill Ambassador Section and Bureaux capacity-building in social media content production and publication.
  • Through the Goodwill Ambassador Section, support, counsel, and training will be given as needed to our talent so they may use their own social media communities to effectively share their UNHCR activities, travels, and messages.
  • Give operations and bureaux more comprehensive direction on how to come up with plans to make the most of prominent supporters and the content we can produce with them on social media.
  • Include the UNHCR’s ethical communications strategy in our larger social media outreach efforts.

Partnerships:

  • Encourage collaborations with social media and digital platforms, especially when it comes to GWA/high-profile supporter content.
  • Work with the media officer in the GWA Section and the Social Media Section’s focal point for social media partnerships to coordinate and take advantage of opportunities.
  • Take part in pertinent professional gatherings and events to network actively with others in the sector; where necessary, represent the company outside.
  1. Competencies and Experience

a. Education

a bachelor’s degree in a related discipline, such as journalism, communications, media, or international relations.

b. Experience at Work

Experience managing platforms for large social accounts and producing social media content for at least three years is necessary if you want to engage audiences around the world with made-for-social material and narrative.

c. Essential Skills

  • Excellent written and vocal English is necessary, as well as expertise in creating social media copy.
  • Supporting social strategy for well-known social channels across competing objectives.
  • Proven ability to pitch, commission, script, and edit made-for-social media (social films and graphics) content.

Assistant Director of Social Media

Duties

The Associate Social Media Officer will bring a committed, specialized capacity along with sound editorial and political judgment, technical multimedia skills, and a keen understanding of audience. The Associate Social Media Officer will put a special emphasis on three areas: paid social, social video content production, and social media planning, strategy, and content creation around reports, events, and initiatives.

The Associate Social Media Officer will work on the following under the direction of the Social Media Officer (Video):

  • Creation of multimedia material for the English-language UNHCR accounts on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, and LinkedIn.
  • Publishing information and messages on UNHCR social media platforms.
  • Assisting the social media video producer with ideas for social videos, particularly those that focus on current events, by writing social video scripts for her to examine, giving her prompt feedback, and helping with editing and production as needed.
  • Coordinating closely with the Digital Engagement team to lead the Social Media Unit’s sponsored social, advertising, and boosting of organic content strategies.
  • Obtaining and receiving content from field agents and country operations for possible usage on the global accounts.
