Organizing, Setting, and Reporting
- The position is located in the Division of Conference Services, French Interpretation Unit, Interpretation Section, UNON.
Responsibilities
The Interpreter will be in charge of the following tasks under the general supervision of the Senior Interpreter:
- Up to seven meetings per week (in extreme cases, eight), typically lasting no longer than three hours.
- Offers translations of speeches or declarations made in English and Russian into French.
- Covers delicate meetings on a regular basis.
- Frequently serves as the team leader for each interpreter sent to a particular meeting.
- You can be asked to lead a team on missions.
- Could help with the examination, training, and screening of potential French interpreters.
- Senior interpreters may receive mentoring and guidance from you.
- The role of programming officer is possible.
- As needed, may carry out additional relevant tasks.

Education
- It is necessary to have a first-level degree from a university or another type of institution. An advanced degree is preferred.
- The United Nations Language Competitive Examination for French Interpreters must have been passed by applicants for this position.
Job-Specific Requirements
- It is necessary to have successfully completed the United Nations Competitive Examination for French Interpreters.
Experience at Work
- It is necessary to have at least five (5) years of professional interpreting experience in global enterprises.
- Experience accurately interpreting a wide range of UN topics is preferred.
- Experience mentoring and coaching junior staff interpreters and trainee interpreters is preferred.
- It would be ideal if you had previous experience grading interpretation tests and/or rating the work of independent contractors.
Languages
- The official working languages of the United Nations Secretariat are English and French. It is necessary to speak French well or flawlessly, which is typically anticipated to be the incumbent’s primary language. Candidates for this post must also be fluent in both Russian and English.
NOTE: “Fluency” equals a rating of “fluent” in all four areas (read, write, speak, and understand), and “Knowledge of” is a rating of “confident” in two of the four.
