In collaboration with local, national, and international development and humanitarian actors, UNICEF helps the Chadian government create programs and policies that support and uphold children’s rights to protection, education, and survival.

In order to achieve this, UNICEF Chad has a central office, four zonal offices, and a team of staff members that regularly administer and oversee the collaboration program. UNICEF facilitates accessibility to communities in need through its offices and promotes accountability to these populations.

How can you influence things?

Accountable for developing, planning, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating UNICEF’s emergency response in activities and outcomes related to safeguard and improve public health of the affected population by ensuring overall efficiency, effectiveness, and delivery of results in accordance with UNICEF’s Core Commitment for Children in Emergencies. Under the overall supervision of the Emergency Coordinator / Outpost Farchana and guidance of Chief Child Protection.

Important duties, obligations, and related tasks

  • Lead the construction of child protection coordination mechanisms for the emergency response in cooperation with other CP partners, UN Agencies, and the government, if necessary.
  • Support the use of pre-approved inter-agency assessment instruments as part of a quick child protection evaluation with partners.
  • As appropriate, address family dissolution, gender-based violence, child recruitment and use by armed forces or armed groups, trafficking, the mental health and well-being of children and their families, mine action, arbitrary/illegal arrest and detention of children, other protection concerns for children, etc. Support strategies and mechanisms to scale up the child protection response to the emergency.
  • Provide UNICEF child protection employees and partners, including the government and NGOs, with technical support and guidance so that they can scale up the child protection components of disaster response programs, including the creation or modification of initiatives and partnerships.
  • Organize the distribution and acquisition of goods for child protection interventions.
  • Identify possibilities to collaborate with other sectors to improve emergency response plans’ integration of protection measures for women and children.
  • Analyze this data to provide guidance on the child protection response while keeping an eye on trends and new evidence of child protection concerns.
  • Conduct and coordinate monitoring of children’s rights initiatives.
  • In meetings pertaining to humanitarian issues, if necessary, represent UNICEF Child Protection.
  • Assist the CP Chief in managing and overseeing the budget for the CP emergency response.
  • Increase public awareness of child protection issues and UNICEF’s reaction through appropriate media, communication, and humanitarian channels.
  • Participate in all UNICEF, interagency, and governmental planning and reporting processes by contributing your thoughts on child protection issues and UNICEF’s response thereto.

REQUIREMENTS AND COMPETENCIES

  • A doctorate in social work, law, international relations, child psychology, or a related discipline from an advanced university.
  • a minimum of five years’ experience with UNICEF and/or other relevant organizations, including knowledge of child protection initiatives in the situations of armed conflict and/or natural disasters
  • understanding of the humanitarian cluster strategy, in particular the child protection working group (sub-cluster), the gender-based violence area of responsibility, and the protection cluster, as well as UNICEF’s basic commitments to children in humanitarian action
  • knowledge of program coordination and emergency response.

linguistic ability

  • fluency in written and spoken French. Knowledge of another UN language (English or Arabic) is advantageous, as are strong writing and verbal communication skills in the language of the humanitarian mission.
