The Gambia Press Union (GPU) hosts the National Journalism Awards as the centrepiece of the nation’s yearly celebration of World Press Freedom Day.

All types of news and information media, including print, online/multimedia platforms, radio, television, and photography, are recognised and honoured by the Awards, which also commemorate and honour courage and quality in Gambian journalism.

Award Categories

  • The Gambia Press Union, which organises the National Journalism Awards, is thrilled to announce the categories for this year’s competition.
  • There are awards in 18 categories.
  • Reporting in any area of the economy or business enterprise should be included in entries for the business and finance reporting award.
  • Entries for the sports reporting award must deal with sports reporting, including coverage of sporting events, the business of sports, and stories on athletes.
  • Entries for the Environment/Climate Change Reporting Award should be related to environmental issues, such as environmental protection, conservation, climate change, and creative approaches to stop environmental harm.
  • Entries for the Health & Medical Reporting Award should include the impact of health issues on communities as well as the prevention, protection, and treatment of diseases and ailments.
  • Entries for the Women’s Reporting Award must deal with coverage of any facet of women’s concerns in the Gambia.
  • Entries for the Children’s Reporting Award must deal with coverage of any element of problems affecting children in The Gambia.
  • Reporting on any facet of travel and tourism, including how it affects the economic and sociocultural contexts, is acceptable for the Travel and Tourism Reporting Award.
  • Submissions for the agriculture reporting award may cover any aspect of agriculture, including farming, animal husbandry, aquaculture, etc.
  • Legal Affairs Reporting Reports addressing difficulties with transitional justice and court reporting should be submitted for this area.
  • Award for Security Reporting
  • Public voting is conducted for this category. Information about the public vote will be released when appropriate.
  • Reporting on any facet of culture, the arts, or entertainment is acceptable for the Culture, Arts, and Entertainment Reporting Award. This includes reporting on how these topics impact the economic and societal contexts.
  • Photo Journalism Award Entries must be published by the deadline for 2022 award entries and may cover any facet of photojournalism.
  • Entries for the Human Rights Reporting Award should cover reporting on any human rights topic.
  • The Best Community/Rural Radio Station
  • Public voting is conducted for this category. Information about the public vote will be released when appropriate.
  • Entries for the Migration & Human Trafficking Reporting Award must address reporting on any element of migration and human trafficking.
  • Entries for the political reporting award must involve coverage of political and political activity in the Gambia.
  • Entries for the Investigative Reporting Award must deal with investigative reporting in any of its forms.
  • Annual Journalist Award
  • This category honours the top story across all categories, in all forms of media, including print, radio, television, and online/multimedia platforms. There is no entry fee for this category. Judges will decide which one to use.

eligibility requirements

  • All accredited journalists and media organisations with a base in the Gambia are eligible to enter. In addition, media organisations with a focus on the Gambia that are based outside will be given consideration for this year’s prizes. Journalists from the Gambia who have articles published in domestic and international media are also eligible. Every entry must have values from Gambia news.
  • The following are ineligible: editorials, opinion pieces, material produced under contract for commercial promotion, and newsletter issues/articles.
  • Personal blogs, personal social media pages (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc.), personal social media accounts, and content from non-media sources are not permitted.

Rules

  • A work or story also cannot be entered in more than one category. For instance, one entry per submission; two entries per submission; etc.
  • A news item’s audio or video entry cannot be longer than three minutes. Special reports and features may last up to 7 minutes.
  • Up to 3,000 words can be used in text entries.
  • English must be used for all entries.
  • Entries for audio and video that are not in English must have English subtitles or be translated into English.
  • Any Editor may submit material for another journalist, regardless of whether that journalist is on that Editor’s staff.
