The Motsepe Foundation has generously donated to create the Motsepe Presidential Research Accelerator Fund for Africa. In cooperation with the Centre for African Studies, the Office of the Vice Provost for Research and the Office of the Vice Provost for International Affairs will administer the Fund.

The Fund’s main goal is to provide funding for faculty-led and student-driven research initiatives that advance important issues and opportunities for Africa, including but not limited to the following fields:

  • The Fourth Industrial Revolution and new technologies
  • Effects of climate change on livelihoods, health, agriculture, water quality, and/or sanitation
  • Renewable energy’s advantages for society’s infrastructure, health, and ageing materials, as well as the governance and regulations required for an entrepreneurial economy

eligibility requirements

  • People who hold a faculty appointment at a Harvard School and have principal investigator rights at that School are encouraged to apply.
  • Faculty at Harvard Medical School are required to hold a faculty appointment with primary investigator privileges in a fundamental or social science department at HMS. Support for Harvard postdocs, graduate students, and undergraduates may be requested by faculty.
  • No funding will be given to those who are serving as the primary investigators of Motsepe Presidential Research Accelerator Fund for Africa awards. If their previous award cycle has ended, previous grantees are welcome to apply for a new project.

Instructions and Requirements for Applications

  • In order to comply with school rules, applicants are urged to consult with local research administrators before submitting their applications.
  • The following data and supporting documentation must be submitted:
  • Information on how to get in touch with the lead investigator and any co-authors or collaborators.
  • Summarising the plan in one paragraph (no more than 150 words)
  • A proposal of up to 1,000 words should be submitted, briefly outlining the proposed research endeavour, its significance and anticipated effects, as well as any suggested collaborations with academics or researchers living in Africa.
  • There will be an additional field available for the input of up to two pages of auxiliary data (citations, pictures, etc.).
  • The applicant’s discipline may or may not be represented on the faculty review committee, which is made up of people from several academic fields. As a result, candidates are strongly urged to submit proposals that show impact in a way that a highly educated lay audience can understand.
  • For the PI, co-investigator, and collaborator, each CV should be no longer than three pages. Please also send a CV for each postdoctoral scholar or graduate student for whom money is requested. No biosketches are allowed.
  • You must submit the project budget using the form found in the application. Additionally, applicants must utilise the accompanying budget justification form to justify each line item.
  • An appropriate representative of the applicant’s department or division attests, for example, the academic dean, department chair, or administrative director, that:
  • if the project is selected, their department and/or division will administer it (details are supplied in the application portal).
  • If wage support is requested, it has been authorised by the appropriate parties (see below for more details).
  • Collaboration or support letters are not required and are not accepted.
  • Unacceptable costs
  • Students’ fees
  • Costs of capital projects and renovation
