The Scholars Programme has been available on both McGill University campuses since 2013 thanks to collaboration between the university and the Mastercard Foundation. The Scholars Programme works to identify future leaders from Sub-Saharan Africa who possess academic talent and give them access to top-tier university education together with extensive support systems. 120 accomplished undergraduate and graduate scholars have successfully completed their degrees at McGill University over the past ten years thanks to the programme. At McGill, the programme has been extended for an additional ten years.

Eligible Study Subjects

Master’s Degree Programmes Only (Non-Thesis)

  • Agricultural Sustainability and Animal Science
  • Environmental engineering and bioresource engineering
  • Food and bioprocessing integrated with bioresource engineering
  • Integrated Water Resource Management in Bioresource Engineering
  • Biostatistics
  • Biotechnology
  • Agriculture Chemistry and Food Science – Food Science
  • Food Safety: Food Science and Agricultural Chemistry
  • Project on Human Nutrition: Public Health and Policy (no more than 5 Scholars annually)


Eligibility

You must meet the following requirements to be eligible for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Programme:

  • Being eligible to enrol in one of McGill University’s non-thesis programmes
  • Never started or finished any advanced studies;
  • Be a resident of and a citizen of a Sub-Saharan African nation (see the list of participating nations);
  • Obtain a study permit and be eligible to enter Canada as an international student with a valid passport. Not eligible are people who have dual citizenship, asylee, refugee, or permanent resident status in the US, Canada, UK, or EU.
  • Although you are allowed to apply even if you do not self-identify with one of the priority categories for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Programme (mentioned below), those who do will be given preference in the selection process.
  • Woman with disabilities who is a refugee or internally displaced person
  • Possess a stellar history of involvement in your neighbourhood or school;
  • Possess the intention to return home as soon as you have earned your degree in order to improve your town through social and economic growth;
  • Must be younger than 35 years old while applying.

Benefits

  • In order to achieve these goals, McGill provides Scholars with an extensive support network that includes mentorship, specialised support services, volunteer opportunities, and ongoing programming pertinent to their personal growth. During their studies, scholars also get support and financing for two internships in their home nations.
  • These internships are designed to keep Scholars connected to their home countries and pave the way for fulfilling employment after graduation.

  • Mastercard Foundation Scholarship Programme: To determine your eligibility for the study programme and scholarship, fill out the Mastercard Foundation Scholarship Application Form. Only applications that are full and come from applicants who satisfy the prerequisites will be taken into account.

Submission Forms

  • Graduate Programmes at McGill: Prospective applicants should start the McGill University Graduate Application, however they should finish all other requirements before paying the application fee.
  • Scholars Programme for the Mastercard Foundation: To be pre-screened for academic and scholarship eligibility, complete the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Programme Application form. Only applications that are comprehensive and satisfy the minimal qualifying conditions will be taken into account.
