Responsibility & Role:
An economist is needed to work with our South Asia team in Washington, DC. You will be urged to support the practice’s local and international knowledge base, as are all Poverty GP members. You will be responsible for the following tasks in particular:
- Take part as a key team member in projects addressing microfinance, labor markets, equity, spatial, gender, and multidimensional poverty, as well as mobility, vulnerability, agency, and voice diagnostics.
- Assist in developing technical and policy recommendations for national and sectoral teams on how to address eradicating poverty and promoting equity, as well as encouraging evidence-based decision-making.
- Use and create tools and technology to track trends in gender, equity, and poverty.
- Examine the distributional effects of investments and policies in the fiscal, social, and other sectors.
- Encourage the creation of initiatives for data exchange and analysis as well as statistical public goods.
Selection Standards
- The following is what we’re looking for: 1. A seasoned development micro-economist who is dedicated to lowering poverty and boosting shared prosperity and who has practical expertise using creative and avant-garde methods and tools to that end. 2. An expert with a track record of solid analytical work, outstanding judgment, and knowledge of international development. 3. An economist with strong technical skills who can develop high-quality technical outputs and apply technical findings to policy.
Minimum level of education and experience
- A minimum of a master’s degree in economics, statistics, mathematics, public policy, or a similar discipline is required, along with at least five years of relevant professional experience. A doctorate is desired in these fields.
other criteria for selection
- Proven competency in at least one of the three work streams around which the country-level programs of the poverty global practice are organized. It would be ideal to have experience in more than one of those work streams;
- The Application of Technical and Quantitative Skills Microeconomist – Has expertise in statistical modeling and microeconomics, and has designed, implemented, and analyzed household surveys, administrative data, large data, and advanced econometric analyses;
- Outstanding interpersonal skills; capacity to work productively in multidisciplinary teams; ability to hear and incorporate ideas from various sources, including governments, NGOs, and donors; respect for and sensitivity to issues of culture, politics, and gender;
- The ability to guide, coach, and inspire more junior staff members while working with personnel at all levels.
- Proficient public speaking and excellent written and spoken English skills (required). Experience working as a practitioner in developing and/or transitioning nations, as well as experience with operational programs relating to gender, labor, and/or poverty (including capacity development), are desired.
