The program’s main goals are as follows:

  • To instruct fellows in the use of DHS Programme data in analysis and research.
  • To improve the capabilities Fellows will utilise to incorporate DHS Programme data into their instruction.
  • To improve Fellows’ abilities to support others’ use of DHS Programme data at their home campuses.
  • The DHS Fellows Programme will be delivered in a hybrid format with two in-person workshops and virtual components in 2024.

Requirements

  • Universities in Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, Gabon, Gambia, Guinea, Jordan, Kenya, Liberia, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia are accepting applications from academics in these countries.
  • The home university must be the only base of operation for every team member.
  • Applications must come from groups of two individuals from the same university who teach or perform research in the social sciences, such as economics, sociology, public health, or demography. Note that there has been a change from prior years when teams consisted of three people.
  • People who have already taken part in a data analysis workshop run by The DHS Programme are ineligible, but those who have only taken part in a workshop on service provision assessment (SPA) or geographic information systems (GIS) are still welcome to apply.
  • There must be one senior faculty member on each team. The DHS Programme requires that both team members be available to participate in two in-person sessions (see projected timeframe below).
  • Before attending the first workshop, everyone must also finish the online DHS Dataset User training. Depending on your ability level, you should be able to finish this course in one to two days.
  • The most recent version of Stata statistical software will be made available for usage during the course.

Benefits

  • The selection of Fellows will primarily be focused on the potential of candidates to improve the ability of their home university to exploit DHS Programme data and the quality of their research proposal. Gender equality and prior knowledge of data utilisation and statistical analysis will be added considerations.
  • A $3,000 honorarium will be given to each fellow to cover research costs, travel costs, and other incidentals. Payment will be made in stages dependent on the successful fulfilment of the deliverables. This reward will be reduced for missing trainings or submitting work that has to be completed.
  • The DHS Programme will pay for each fellow’s round-trip economy airfare from their home institution as well as lodging with only breakfast and lunch so they can attend both seminars. Following the selection process, each fellow will be responsible for securing a visa for the nation hosting the workshop; all other expenses should be covered by the honorarium.
