This five-day course will aid South African journalists in better comprehending Net Zero, how the nation is doing in terms of its decarbonization objectives, and how efforts are being made to create a just transition.

The workshop will put a strong emphasis on data journalism with the goal of fostering data literacy and advising journalists on how to use and incorporate data into their work in order to produce hard-hitting and significant stories.

Benefits

  • Selected participants’ expenses for travel, lodging, and meals will be covered by EJN.
  • Journalists will have a better knowledge of how this policy affects local residents’ and communities’ daily life. Along with learning how to access important databases and how to properly visualise data for a range of audiences, participants will also develop and enhance their data journalism skills.
  • Selected participants will combine classroom-style learning with a field excursion to experience the repercussions of the topics being discussed in the real world. The classroom-style workshops will include both lectures from outside speakers and practical instruction in data skills. They will get the chance to interact with peers, participate in exercises that will enhance their capacity, hear from speakers and specialists on the relevant topics.

eligibility requirements

  • South African journalists can attend the training. The workshop is accessible to journalists of all skill levels interested in enhancing their coverage of the nation’s climate mitigation initiatives and limiting warming to 1.5°C over pre-industrial levels within a rapidly closing window; no prior expertise in data journalism is necessary.
  • Journalists interested in covering the subject who are driven and self-starters are encouraged to apply. They are looking for journalists who want to advance their data journalism capabilities and long-term integrate data journalism into their work.
  • They are particularly interested in hearing from reporters who cover the business, financial, and technology beats as well as those who carefully follow the nation’s emission-reduction policies.
  • They encourage journalists with a track record of creating insightful, in-depth stories to apply from print, television, web, and/or radio.

Criteria

  • A letter endorsing the application from the applicant’s editor or media outlet is required. The application process is open to freelance journalists, but they must provide a letter of support from a media outlet promising to publish or broadcast their articles.
  • Two published writing samples or links to web stories are required from applicants.
  • The selected story clips address climate, clean transportation, and energy challenges.
