The Pure Ocean Challenges are now accepting applications to fund creative, applied research projects all over the world, helping to save biodiversity and threatened marine ecosystems.

Themes (Based on the 10 Ocean Decade Challenges Set by the United Nations)

  • Identifying marine pollution’s causes and addressing them
  • The preservation of biodiversity and the repair of damaged maritime environments
  • strengthening the resistance to climate change of marine ecosystems and the populations that depend on them
  • Enhancing their understanding of the ocean system

Financial Details

  • At the discretion of the Scientific Committee, selected projects may receive up to €40,000/year (an average of €25,000/year) for a period of one to two years.
  • Therefore, a two-year project may receive up to 80,000 euros in funding, and funding for some initiatives may be repeated.

Features unique to

  • This year, projects that focus on constraints on the Mediterranean Sea, target polar ecosystems, and propose “nature-based” solutions through the preservation of marine habitats (blue carbon, food security) will receive special attention.
  • Naturally, projects that don’t fit these characteristics but nonetheless meet the requirements for qualifying will be approved.

eligibility requirements

  • One or more Pure Ocean Challenges must be addressed by the project.
  • They look for and aid worldwide initiatives.
  • Although there is no age restriction, applicants who are just starting their careers are especially encouraged to apply.
  • Only non-profit institutions (NGOs, colleges, and research centres) are eligible to apply for and receive money. However, working with private, for-profit parties (businesses, start-ups, etc.) may be necessary for the project.
  • In their budget, applicants must include details about their co-financing options as well as a minimal operating budget in case Pure Ocean is unable to provide the whole amount asked.
