The Diversity Immigrant Visa Programme was established by statute and is annually administered by the Department of State. A type of immigrants known as “diversity immigrants” from nations with historically low rates of immigration to the United States are allowed under Section 203(c) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA). Up to 55,000 Diversity Visas (DVs) will be offered during Fiscal Year 2025. Registration for the DV programme is free of charge, but those chosen for an interview must pay a visa application fee before submitting a formal visa application, during which a consular official will decide whether they are eligible for the visa.

Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, The People’s Republic of China (including mainland and Hong Kong born), Colombia, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, India, Jamaica, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, Republic of Korea (South Korea), Venezuela, and Vietnam natives are not eligible to apply for DV-2025 because more than 50,000 of their citizens immigrated to the United States in the previous five years.

- First condition: Citizens of nations with historically low immigration rates to the United States may be admitted.
- There are two alternative ways you can be eligible if you are not a native of a nation with historically low rates of immigration to the United States.
- Is your spouse a native of a nation with a historically low immigration rate to the US?
- If the answer is yes, you are allowed to claim your spouse’s country of birth as long as both of you are listed on the chosen entry, are approved for diversity visas, and enter the nation at the same time.
- Are you a native of a nation with a historically high rate of immigration to the US but where neither of your parents were born or were lawfully residing when you were born?

Condition two:
- Each DV applicant must satisfy the program’s requirements for education and job experience by possessing one of the following:
- at least a high school diploma, which is the equivalent of completing a 12-year formal elementary and secondary education course;
OR
- two years of work experience in the last five years in a profession that calls for at least two years of education or training.
- To determine the appropriate job experience, the Department of State will consult the O*Net Online database of the U.S. Department of Labour.
Selection
- The E-DV website, dvprogram.state.gov, will provide Entrant Status Check, which is accessible from May 4, 2024, through September 30, 2025, with official notifications of selection. The Department of State does not send letters or notices to selectees through email or ordinary mail.
- Any email or letter claiming to be from the Department of State and informing you that you have been chosen to obtain a DV is invalid. The Department of State will advise you to check Entrant Status Check for updates to your application in any email correspondence you get from the agency.Unless you are changing your status, the Department of State will never require you to mail money or use a service like Western Union.
