The competition winner will have the exceptional opportunity to present their data visualisation at the UN COP28 climate summit, which is scheduled to take place in the United Arab Emirates later this year [31 Nov – 12 Dec].
Help them create ‘Little Pictures’ that are appealing and effective using decades of satellite climate data to raise awareness and motivate action.
You can present your own data-driven Little Picture at the UN COP28 climate summit if you submit it. A VIP visit of the ESA data-visualization suite at the ESRIN Facility in Frascati, Italy, will also be offered to you on a “expenses paid” basis.
What weather information can you use?
- Using data and information from ESA, ECMWF, and EUMETSAT, the objective of this challenge is to develop a visualisation with a clear climatic message (that, for example, demonstrates climate trends, variability across seasonal, yearly, or decadal scale).
- They ask that you incorporate information from the following sources for your Little Picture:
- Climate Data Facility of the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Climate Change Initiative (selected datasets are also accessible on the Little Pictures github repository in an accessible CSV format).
- The C3S Climate Data Store and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF).
- The data repository of the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT).
Prize Specifics
- The winner will have their Little Picture displayed on the ESA booth at the UN COP28 climate conference in the UAE (30 November to 12 December) to promote awareness of climate change and the role of satellites in advancing scientific knowledge and addressing climate change; they will also be invited to take an expense-paid VIP tour (up to 2,000 euros) of the phi experience, an Earth observation data-visualization suite at the ESA’s ESRIN facility in Frascati, Italy (they encourage this).
- Ten runners-up will get our judges’ praise and have their Little Picture entry added to our online Little Pictures exhibition.
eligibility requirements
- Everybody gets one entry.
- You must be at least 18 years old to enter (families and groups are welcome, but the person posting the entry must be at least 18 years old, and only adults over 18 are eligible for the top prize).
- Entries must be submitted as a data-driven image of less than 2MB in size (accepted file types include: doc, jpeg, jpg, pdf, png, tif, and heic), or as a URL to a hosted data visualisation, along with a short title and a description of the Little Picture that includes the message it is intended to convey, the data used, and the method(s) used to create it. Additionally, sources must be cited.
- Only adults above the age of 18 may appear in any photographs or videos. Everyone in the photograph or video must have given their permission.
- Except for employees of the European Space Agency, the European Centre for Medium Range Forecasting (ECMWF), EUMETSAT, suppliers, contractors, and members of their immediate families or households, the Competition is only open to people who reside in a Member State, Associate Member, or Cooperating State of the European Space Agency, the European Centre for Medium Range Forecasting (ECMWF), EUMETSAT, or the European Union.

Judging Standards
- When examining and shortlisting applications, the judging panel will take the following factors into account:
- Clarity of statement: Does the Little Picture contain an impressive visual and a clear statement that uses climate data from the ESA, ECMWF, and/or EUMETSAT (40% weighting)?
- Is the Little Picture lovely and a celebration of good design? 30% of the total.
- Innovation & Novelty: Does the Little Picture showcase creativity and innovation by embracing novel formats and design strategies? 20% of the total.
- Accessibility: Does the Little Picture consider equity in the representation of various people or groups and use inclusive design decisions to aid accessibility? (Weighted at 10%).
