Independent newsrooms are invited by SANEF to participate in the program’s second call by joining the community media digitalization effort.

The goal of this curriculum is to support print and broadcast community media companies in developing sustainable websites, workflows, and other digital media platforms, as well as outlining their online media strategies.

The plan will also help newsrooms improve their methods for producing and distributing information while making full use of all digital technologies.

Participants will learn how to build up tools and workflows for digital news gathering, multimedia production, content management, and dissemination to the web and social media during this second call. Additionally, there will be optional modules that cover platforms like WhatsApp and TikTok as well as streaming and podcasting services.

eligibility

  • This request for applications is the second one. Organisations that responded to the first request by applying should refrain from doing so again because their applications will already be taken into consideration for the second round.
  • Independent publishers and community broadcasters, with or without websites, are welcome to apply.
  • Each chosen participant will receive specialised support that is tailored to meet their unique needs. For instance, candidates who currently have a WordPress website won’t likely get a new one, but depending on how the project team evaluates their current sites, they might get help making improvements to it.
  • Selected participants will also serve in a mentoring capacity to help others and promote talent transfer within the industry.
  • For your organisation to be eligible, it must:
  • Be a local media organisation with a weak or nonexistent online presence.
  • operate mostly in the local media space (print or broadcast).
  • possess a minimum of three years’ experience regularly producing and distributing news material to a specific audience. Simple mechanisms are already in place for assembling news and information, editing, and other content processing for publication and distribution.
  • The websites, tools, and processes that they learn about and get during the pilot should be integrated, operated, updated, and sustained by employees and/or volunteers who possess the fundamental abilities (computer literacy: usage of internet browsers, word processors).
  • Develop strong connections with neighbourhood companies that are willing to try out new or additional types of advertising and partnerships.
  • Accept and adhere by the BCCSA Code and/or the South African Press Council Code.
  • Obtain corporate, cooperative, or NPO registration.
