“Although the attack on women’s and girls’ rights has expanded to several nations and areas in recent years, nowhere else in the world has there been a pushback as pervasive, methodical, and all-encompassing as in Afghanistan. Through the instrumentalisation of religion and under the pretext of morality, every element of their life is being constrained.

Since the Taliban took control of Kabul in August 2021, the dictatorship has gotten stronger, imposing strict Sharia law enforcement starting in November 2022, and silencing women, girls, and LGBTQIA+ minorities. Deprived of their fundamental rights, they are exposed to systematic discrimination, which prevents them from moving around, working, and making dress decisions. They are also excluded from political and public life after finishing primary school. They are frequently detained, mistreated, and subjected to death threats. Since the end of the 1990s, the Taliban have been widely exposed for their acts of violence and discrimination, which are against the law according to various international agreements that Afghanistan has ratified.

Award

  • The laureates are chosen by an international jury and awarded a €50,000 grant to conduct a 6-month field study with assistance from the Fondation Carmignac. Upon their return, the Fondation Carmignac creates a travelling exhibition and the publication of a monograph.

There will be two phases to the laureate selection process:

  • The pre-jury, which consists of curators and directors of photography, is tasked with choosing 12 to 15 proposals from all of the submissions.

The jury meets the winning photographer after the selection process is complete in order to speak with him or her and, if necessary, to offer any help that will be required during the course of their project, from the creation of the reportage to its final presentation.
