MARG I Benefits
- The Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association (WIOMSA) Marine Research Grant (MARG) Programme was established in 1995 with the goal of enhancing the ability of researchers in the WIO region to perform studies that advance many fields of marine science.
- The MARG I Grant seeks to give MSc and PhD candidates and other early-career researchers the chance to carry out specific research projects in their home nations/institutions.
- The research projects should last up to a year and can cover any area of management of marine and coastal ecosystems, including lab, translation, implementation, and policy research.
- The nine Priority Future Decade Actions (Ocean Decade Africa Roadmap) and the WIOMSA Strategic Objective (2021-2025) have outlined the strategic orientations that projects should follow.
- The MARG I Grant will also provide special financing for seagrass research initiatives that advance and increase the role of seagrass in the WIO region’s development of the blue economy and socio-ecological resilience.
- The Le Fonds français pour l’environnement mondial (FFEM) will provide money for the cooperative seagrass project between WIOMSA and the IUCN.
- We encourage seagrass initiatives that examine the potential for storing carbon, seagrass restoration, the spatial interconnectedness between seagrass beds and other nearby ecosystems, threats, pressures, and management options.
Grant for African MarCOSIO Students from GMES
- The goal of the GMES and Africa MarCOSIO grant is to offer PhD and MSc research in pertinent subjects competitive funding.
- The objective is to use Earth observation (EO) data and technologies to support training and capacity building in South and East African marine and coastal sectors.
- The projects must produce satellite services and products that are applicable to the maritime and coastal environment as well as inland lakes, and they must utilise Earth observation technologies to do so. Students interested in geoinformatics, computer science, artificial intelligence, remote sensing, oceanography, climatology, geography, hydrology, hydrogeology, environmental risk management, or other related subjects are welcome to apply.
- A MarCOSIO Student Grant of up to US$ 2400 is available to candidates pursuing Masters and Doctoral degrees who have qualified themes in order to help defray or augment their living and research expenses.
