An academic paper titled “Emergent Trolleybuses” - Work Environment; based at home
- Expected time frame; one year
Tasks and Responsibilities
The consultant will create the technical paper titled “Emergent Trolleybuses: The Potential for Trolleybus Technology in Low- and Middle-Income Cities” while working under the direction of the Coordinator of the Global Working Group on Electric Buses.
1. Develop a status quo review of trolleybus vehicle technology (hybrid, battery), infrastructure (pantograph, wiring, In motion charging), and operations (network structure, ridership, intermodality) for various regions, including Low- and Middle-Income (LMI) cities;
2.Develop an evaluation of the opportunities for trolleybus use cases in LMI cities, including major trends related to public transport reform agendas, Bus Rapid Transit project pipelines, electrification targets, and others, as well as a comparison to Battery Electric Buses, including lifecycle emissions, cost, technical and operational aspects;
3.Compile an assessment of the challenges that may be faced to develop and operate trolleybuses in LMI cities, including technical, operational, financial, social/acceptability and supply-chain related barriers;
4.Develop at least three in-depth case studies of existing projects in different regions that highlight relevant use cases for trolleybuses in LMI cities, covering the context (geographic, demographic), landscape (political, economic, policy, history), system structure (actors, institutions, policy rationale, intermediaries), operating characteristics (routes, ridership, costs, vehicles) and lessons that have been learned for the next iteration;
5. Conduct a high-level technical, operational, and financial examination of three or more possible uses for trolley buses as an alternative to the pure battery-electric bus systems now being considered;
6.Compare the schemes in various operational contexts while conducting an analysis of the current and potential use cases, and then provide advice or recommendations on how LMI cities would be able to construct trolleybus initiatives;
7.Combine steps 1 through 6 into a single technical report titled “Emergent Trolleybuses: The Potential for Trolleybus Technology in Low- and Middle-Income Cities” and create an executive summary based on the results.
8.presenting the technical report on “Emergent Trolleybuses: The Potential for Trolleybus Technology in Low- and Middle-Income Cities” to the Global Working Group and taking into account their suggestions;
9. Creation of a slide presentation and audio recording of the technical report “Emergent Trolleybuses: The Potential for Trolleybus Technology in Low- and Middle-Income Cities” for use at Regional Support and Investments Platform meetings and other learning or training opportunities.
