TSL is interested in learning about students’ personal perspectives on how they believe nature may help local communities achieve the SDGs. The theme is up to students’ personal interpretations. They can decide to concentrate on one or more SDGs that they feel are important issues in their community and consider how nature might assist to make things better. To help bring their ideas and dreams to life, they are urged to integrate their own unique points of view, opinions, and experiences.

The question: “How can nature help us achieve the UN SDGs in my community?” is the topic for one English essay that each student is requested to submit.

According to age, the essay length is as follows:

400 words for elementary kids (ages 7 to 11)
(12–18 years old) secondary and college students: 600 words
The bibliography must include the following at a minimum:

Name and version of the generative AI system employed; for example, ChatGPT-3.5 Publisher (firm that created the AI system); for example, OpenAI URL of the AI system.
A succinct (one phrase) description of the environment in which the tool was applied.
the question(s) that the AI system used to provide an answer to.
For instance: I thank ChatGPT 3.5 (Open AI, https://chat.openai.com) for proofreading my final draught and summarising my early notes.

  • One overall Grand Prize Winner will receive a trophy, £1000 in cash, and £500 for their school.
  • One Runner Up will receive a trophy, £500 in cash, and $250 for their school.
  • Cash awards will be given in the local currency. Participants in the International Debate, Teacher Champions, and Essay Finalists & Honourable Mentions will all get customised e-certificates.

Major dates

  • September 8, 2023Launch of the TSL 2024 Essay Competition: NATURE-BASED SOLUTIONS. For the TSL 2024 Essay Competition, teacher champions and schools can now register.
  • The final submission date for essays is January 18, 2024.
  • Finalists of the international essay competition will be announced on March 14, 2024, on the websites of TSL.
  • Top Ten Finalists from the Primary and Secondary Categories Notified by Teacher Champion on April 18, 2024.
  • 18–22 AprilEligible students received invitations to take part in the International Student Debates through their Teacher Champion.
  • Country Debates from 14 March to 31 July 2024.
  • International Schools Debate & Awards in the Summer of 2024 (online) Dates TBD.
