The annual Open Call for Black Public Media 2024 seeks submissions that acknowledge the complexities of the Black experience. An open call for feature-length documentaries and short films (nonfiction or narrative) that are currently in pre-production, production, or post-production is made by BPM every year. Each initiative should be appropriate for distribution through public media. The 2023 Open Call focuses on climate stories.

They are searching for traditional media initiatives that represent the Black community’s perspective on the environment as it is changing. Their content priority encompasses a wide spectrum of creative strategies. The proposals should tell an engaging story, demonstrate a thorough comprehension of the topic, and describe a unique and innovative stylistic approach intended to shed light on the problems, generate debate, and suggest fair solutions to the current difficulties.

Award

  • For a standalone or limited series short production (documentary or narrative), there will be ONE, $30,000 award.
  • FIVE, $40,000 grants for feature-length or broadcast-length projects, with a chance to participate in the PitchBLACK Forum competition.
  • One broadcast-length or feature-length project will receive a $150,000 PitchBLACK Award.

Eligibility

  • The applicant must meet the following requirements: be the producer or director of the project; be a US citizen; have at least three years of experience in professional producing and/or directing; or have a senior producer affiliated to the project;
  • A person of colour must be among the key creatives (producer, director, writer, or editor);
  • A sample video must be included with every submission. For research and development projects, the applicant must have a full-length completed work. A 10-minute sample of the project that is being submitted must be included with projects that are in production. To be taken into consideration, a project must have a full-length rough or fine cut;
  • The candidate must be capable of finishing the project in 18 months;
  • The project being proposed must be under the applicant’s creative, financial, and editorial control, and it must also be his or her original work.
  • Entities involved in projects or production with a foreign base, ownership, or control are ineligible. Both are not commercial, promotional, or student films.

Application

The due dates are exact. They strongly advise that you get started on your application early and “save” up money to finish it later. After the application period has ended, the proposals will be reviewed in two stages by a panel of media professionals from various sectors of the market.
