These grants continue the tradition established by the earlier Marine Conservation Photography Grants and are focused on identifying and assisting a fresh, varied group of conservation storytellers. Although the Save Our Seas Foundation is primarily searching for photographers who can tell tales about ocean conservation, other types of photography are also welcome to apply. Candidates should have a broad perspective; possible tale topics include fisheries, local people, and even the animals themselves. Under direct supervision from the Ocean Storytelling Grant team, four selected grantees will be given a fully-funded assignment to shoot a conservation picture story on location (including day rate and travel).

Benefits

The award consists of a $2,000 USD cash reward, a day rate for a 3- to 4-week shoot, a year of mentoring, and full reimbursement for all shoot-related expenses.

Eligibility

  • Accepting applications from people of all backgrounds and locations.
  • They aspire to foster new voices with fresh ideas and photographic techniques and are especially interested in assisting budding and early-career storytellers. Applications must thus have a maximum of five years of professional experience in a field relevant to photography.
  • In addition, about 80% of the prior photo award candidates were men from North America and Europe, accounting for over two-thirds of the applicant pool. They specifically invite women, individuals from South and Central America, the Caribbean, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and from underrepresented populations to apply for this opportunity in an effort to actively rectify these disparities endemic throughout the sector.

Both direct applications received through an open call and nominations will be accepted.

Application

The deadline for submissions is October 13, 2023 at 18:00 (CEST). We won’t accept late submissions.
