The urgent Sustainable Development Goals Award for Young Scientists 2023 common challenges of sustainable development make it more important than ever for international cooperation and open sharing. The World Association of Young Scientists (WAYS) and the International Research Centre of Big Data for Sustainable Development Goals (CBAS) are collaborating to launch the World Association of Young Scientists Sustainable Development Goals Award (WAYS SDG Award), as they both recognise that the future of science and technology depends on today’s youth. This prize strives to encourage adherence to values while encouraging creativity and unrestricted discovery. The honour also motivates young scientists to assume significant responsibilities that will equip them to pave the route for our sustainable future. The honour recognises the outstanding accomplishments of young scientists and teams who have produced important original ideas and breakthroughs in fundamental technologies, benefiting human civilization and sustainable development.

Nomination

Both individual and group nominations are welcome. By the deadline of September 20, 2023, nominees must submit the online nomination form in its entirety.

Eligibility

All applicants must be under 45 years old. Both gender and nationality are unrestricted.

Qualifications

  1. Candidates should be able to demonstrate significant, creative contributions to the realisation of one or more United Nations SDGs through natural scientific research or through outstanding assistance for applied engineering;
  2. Candidates should participate in, or start, big science programmes and international cooperation projects related to the UN SDGs’ implementation, produce excellent output, or transform their results into substantial social or economic benefits.

Review Methodology

Primary Screening, Primary Evaluation, Re-Evaluation, and Final Evaluation are the four stages of the review procedure.

  1. Artificial intelligence will be used in the initial screening to screen candidates and compile a preliminary list based on the “Scientific Contributions to Sustainable Development Index”.
  2. The Review Committee will conduct expert reviews of the candidates on the Primary Evaluation List, and those who pass must be included to the Re-Evaluation Recommendations List.
  3. The Managing Committee, with the guidance of the Steering Committee, will evaluate and choose the successful candidates.

Total Number of Winners

Out of the eight Sustainable Development Goals specified for this prize, five people will be recognised as winners.

Award Formats

  1. Financial award: Each winner or winning team will receive an RMB 1 million monetary award.
  2. Supporting incentives: Winners will receive membership in WAYS, chances to take part in high-level UN events and international scientific conferences like WYSS, priority support for carrying out research projects, and other related incentives.

Timetable

Beginning on May 15, 2023, applications from all over the world will be accepted. The application deadline is September 20, 2023.

Between September 20 and October 10, 2023, the Primary Evaluation will be finished.

In 2023, the Re-Evaluation will be finished between October 11 and October 25.

The last assessment will be finished between October 26 and October 31, 2023.

Prior to November 10, 2023, winners will be declared.

On November 10–13, 2023, during the opening and closing sessions of the WYSS, awards will be handed.
