East Africa’s 2023 WFP IGNITE SEED Innovation Programme is now accepting applications. With the assistance of Care Denmark and the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) IGNITE Innovation Hub, Circle Innovation, and DTU Skylab Food Lab have launched the eagerly awaited second edition of the IGNITE SEED Innovation programme in East Africa to support entrepreneurial teams with research-backed ideas focused on innovating food systems with market validation and training support to launch these ideas in the market.

The ten-month innovation programme will concentrate on creators and thinkers with ideas supported by research in the area of food systems that have a high potential for upheaval and influence on food security in East Africa.
Benefits
The advantages will consist of:
- Programme for Innovation: Selected teams will take part in the ten-month IGNITE SEED Innovation programme and have access to the one-of-a-kind Human Centred Design (HCD) Lab.
- Innovation Lab: At the conclusion of the HCD Lab, you will present your validated prototype to a group of industry professionals and have the chance to be chosen for a thorough business training programme.
- Business training: Teams that qualify will undergo a rigorous four-month entrepreneurship and business training programme.
- Networking: Selected teams will have access to the extensive WFP and partner networks that can help them take their concepts to the next level.
Eligibility
East African researchers who want to innovate food systems can apply to the IGNITE SEED Innovation project if they fit the following requirements:
- Idea or creation in the field of food systems that is supported by research.
- Working on the concept are at least two team members who are based in Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Ethiopia, or Somalia.
- Interest in developing the concept into a business.
- Fervour for upsetting the food chain to end hunger.
- Throughout the innovation programme, be accessible for programme activities, including live and recorded sessions.
- Particularly encouraged to apply are non-academic innovators and female entrepreneurs.
Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Ethiopia, and Somalia are the target nations.
Evaluation Standards
- The IGNITE SEED Innovation programme seeks high-potential, evidence-based concepts or actions that aim to upend the following components of the food system.
- All solutions are welcome to submit an application; however, those that address food security and enhance local community resilience to climate change will receive priority.
- Boost the nutrition, quality, or production of local food.
- Reduce or eliminate food waste and post-harvest loss.
- Increasing water availability for beneficial use or helping to conserve water
- Entrepreneurs who propose their innovations will be judged using the following standards:
- Based on experimental, industry-led, or university research; influence on regional food systems
the idea’s validity and feasibility for implementation - Possibility of gaining early traction for the innovation programme vision and concept are both clear.
- Strength, expertise, and dedication of the team.
