Essay Contests for African liberty 2023 applications are now being accepted. Any African student currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate programme at an institution with international accreditation is eligible to enter the competition. They are requested to write on the subject of: Opportunities for New Approaches to an Old Problem: Pathways to Protecting Free Speech in Africa.

As a joint venture between the Cato Institute and IMANI Africa in 2007, Essay contests for African Liberty 2023 later became a part of the Atlas Network. It serves as a forum for encouraging civil discourse and debate on social, legal, economic, and international issues that concern Africans in order to advance personal freedom, peace, and prosperity throughout the continent. By collaborating with media partners and think institutes that have an interest in Africa, they track down and mentor young, promising African freedom advocates, train them in professional critical writing, and help them launch their careers in journalism and public policy.
Essay Contests for African Liberty 2023 Prizes
$500 cash is awarded to the winner.
Winner’s prize: $300 in cash.
$200 cash prize for the runner-up.
$100 each for third- and fourth-place finishers.
The platforms of African Liberty and Students For Liberty will publish the top 5 entries.
Eligibility
By virtue of having the nationality of an African nation, the applicant must be of African heritage;
Must be enrolled in a degree programme at a college or university that is accredited anywhere in the world, or must have graduated from a degree programme within three years of the application deadline.
Guidelines
Non-English words should be italicised in entries that are written in English.
The entry must be unique.
The author’s name and email address must be on the first page of the PDF submission.
No citations or footnotes
Quotes should be used sparingly.
The essay must be justified, in Times New Roman, with a 12-point font.

- Arguments and suggestions in the entry must be detailed.
- Unique approaches to solutions are strongly welcomed.
