  • The Tarbell Fellowship Program 2024 for early career journalists applications are open. The Tarbell Fellowship is a one-year programme for early-career journalists interested in covering emerging technologies, especially artificial intelligence.
  • Fellows take a 9-month position in a significant newsroom, take part in a study group covering technological foundations and AI governance, and go to a 2-week journalism summit in Oxford. These internships are supported by a stipend of up to $50,000 from the Tarbell Fellowship.

Background

  • One of the main issues facing humanity in the twenty-first century is artificial intelligence. AI systems could endanger humans drastically as they develop. Advanced AI systems could become out of control for researchers, bad actors could use it as a weapon, and a flood of persuading false information could threaten democracy. These problems don’t get the attention they deserve compared to how important they are. That is what the Tarbell Fellowship aims to change. To steer the public discussion on AI and hold significant AI labs accountable to society, they are building a community of knowledgeable journalists.

Benefits

  • Placement. Fellows are assigned to a major newsroom covering artificial intelligence for nine to twelve months. Details of placement vary each outlet.
  • Stipend. For the period of their placement, fellows receive stipends of up to $50,000, depending on the situation. They anticipate that stipends will range from $35,000 to $50,000 depending on the locale and the individual.
  • Advanced AI Training. Fellows go through a two-month training on the fundamentals of AI technical and governance principles prior to placements. This program runs remotely and needs about 10 hours each week. Sessions include readings, paired assignments, and guest lecturers.
  • London Summit. The first two weeks of the fellowship are spent in Oxford at a summit for fellows. Guest lecturers, workshops, and networking events will fill this busy fortnight in Oxford and London. The price of travel and lodging will be entirely covered.


Eligibility

  • Open to budding journalists who want to change the world.
  • There is no maximum age for applicants.
  • The candidate should be extremely interested in artificial intelligence and how it will impact society. The majority of fellows will have prior professional experience in AI governance, machine learning research, or tech journalism.
  • Be fervently interested in journalism. Although not required, previous journalistic experience (even at student publications) or experience in a related discipline, such as law or research, is preferred.
  • They prioritize potential over experience in order to encourage emerging journalists.
  • Outstanding writing abilities. a creative narrative approach and the capacity to swiftly grasp the core of a new subject. Fellows must be able to write persuasive copy on short notice.Be persistent. the capacity to persevere in the face of difficulty while tenaciously pursuing your goals. The ability to work hard and endure recurrent rejection are requirements for fellows.
  • Open-minded. the urge to learn the truth of any given tale, even when it goes against one’s preconceived notions. Fellows must be receptive to criticism and aware of ways they may sharpen their writing and thought processes.


Application

Fill out the application completely. Include your resume, respond to a few quick questions, and deliver one to three writing samples. The Tarbell Fellowship in 2024 will last from January through December. On October 1, 2023, applications for this cohort will expire.
