Deadline: the 31st of August 2023 | Smithsonian Climate Change Fellowships 2023-2024 (STIPEND OF $62 000)
The Smithsonian Climate Change Fellowships 2023–2024: Advancing Life on a Sustainable Planet are now accepting applications. Our planet is being profoundly and dramatically altered by climate change, and Smithsonian experts have been studying and gathering data to comprehend these changes for decades. One of the largest natural history collections in the world is housed at The Smithsonian, which also conducts transdisciplinary research on climate change with partners and collaborators from more than 140 nations through its 21 museums and science and cultural research institutes.

The Smithsonian hopes to assist five fellows as they carry out independent study in the spirit of the institution’s extensive research endeavor and in support of its objectives to comprehend and inform climate change solutions through the Smithsonian Climate Change Fellowship. By utilizing the Smithsonian’s researchers, collections, exhibits, and data sets, these fellows will be able to increase scientific knowledge of climate change and the effects it is having on nature and human well-being.
A Smithsonian Museum or research facility will welcome fellows. In order to promote cross-institutional collaboration, fellows are required to choose an advisor from one of the designated units, and they urge applicants to choose a second advisor from a different Smithsonian Museum or research center. While all ideas are welcome, the Smithsonian experts who will be serving as advisors have recommended the following focus areas.
Themes for Research
Potential study topics could focus on, but not just:
- a globe devoid of mangroves? Mangrove range shrinkage in the Anthropocene: effects of climate change (SERC)
- Blue carbon data synthesis using a seascape strategy to combat climate change (SERC, STRI)
- Ocean warming and biodiversity pushing the limits (MarineGEO)
- Ocean Change and Biominerals (NMNH)
- Tropical Working Landscapes Construction (STRI, SERC, NZCBI)
- Consequences of climate change, adaptations made in response to it, and actions taken to
- conserve biodiversity and ecosystem function in grasslands (NZCBI)
- Early identification and treatment of infectious disease outbreaks related to climate change (NZCBI)
- Enhancing tropical marine symbiosis resilience (STRI, SERC, NZCBI)
- Using digital data and museum collections to study how climate has affected plant migration in the Americas (NMNH)
- Releasing information from the Smithsonian’s Pacific Ocean Biological Survey Program (SLA/BHL, NMNH, NZCBI) to support the sustainable management of marine ecosystems
- Using long-term datasets (ForestGEO, STRI) to clarify how the climate affects interactions between species in tropical forests and ecosystem function
Linking long-term monitoring and remote sensing data (SERC, ForestGEO) to scale climate influences on forest growth
SAO: The View from Space
Accelerating Climate Resilience and Conservation via Integrating Oyster and Coral Reef Research (SERC, MarineGEO)
Stipend
- A salary of $62,000 will be given to winners each year as postdoctoral fellows. When a period is shorter than 24 months, stipends are prorated.
- During the fellowship duration, a maximum research allowance of $10,000 is provided.
Eligibility
- By the start of the fellowship, candidates for postdoctoral fellowships must already have earned or will soon earn their doctorate.
- The applicant must propose to do out research while living there.
