Eligible nations are those in Africa.

Grants from the British Ecological Society (BES): With the help of this award, ecologists in Africa will be able to conduct cutting-edge ecological research. Our award is intended to support you in developing your skills, experience, and knowledge base as well as forging relationships with ecologists in the developed world because we recognize that ecologists in Africa confront particular difficulties when doing research. By providing funds for services and equipment, we support outstanding ecological research in Africa.

Grants from the British Ecological Society (BES) are available to: Candidates ought to:

  • Be a scientist and a citizen of an African nation or one of its linked islands, defined by the World Bank as having a “low-income economy” or “lower-middle-income economy.”
  • possess at least an MSc or equivalent degree, work for an African university or research organization (including field centers, NGOs, museums, etc.) that offers basic research facilities, and conduct the research in an African nation or one of its connected islands

Selection Standards:

  • A panel of reviewers will evaluate your submission based on your personal qualities, the scientific excellence, originality, and viability of the proposal, as well as the intended research’s potential for both academic and non-academic impact.
  • You should be able to show that you have contacts with ecologists in developed nations who can offer guidance for the planned project. If your application calls for overseas travel, you should show that you have intimate ties to the people you would be visiting.
  • Research that focuses just on agriculture, forestry, or bioprospecting is not eligible for funding. Instead, funding is available for all areas of ecological science. Please be aware that funding will not be provided for studies that are solely descriptive or that could be viewed as incremental.
  • The application should be for a clearly defined research topic even though the proposed project may be a component of an already running program. Researchers must also demonstrate how their work will have an influence outside of academia.

Value of grants from the British Ecological Society (BES):

  • A research award may not exceed £8,000 in value.
  • You may also ask for an extra payment of up to £2,000 to cover the cost of travel in order to meet ecologists outside of your normal circle of colleagues.
  • When you return to your own university, the facilities and expertise you gained while working with ecologists in developed nations will be helpful. Travel funding is available for this purpose.
  • Successful candidates also receive a complimentary BES membership for two years and unrestricted online access to our journals.
  • Timeline/Duration of the Program: Within a period of 18 months, the intended work must be finished.
