Are you an expert or hobbyist photographer, or are millets your sole passion? Do you cultivate, refine, or market millets? Would you be prepared to share your knowledge? Participate in the IYM 2023 Photo Contest to raise awareness of the various advantages of millets, including their commercial potential, diversity, capacity to grow on arid regions, and range of nutrient-rich recipes they can provide.

Your image should depict one or more of the ideas listed below:

  • Millets can help with food security and the battle against hunger;
  • Climate-resilient millets;
  • Millets are delicious and can be a part of a balanced diet;
  • Millets provide small-scale farmers and small and medium-sized businesses with attractive post-harvest and processing job prospects;
  • Millets have a long history and can be used in a variety of creative ways.

Prizes

  • The formal closing ceremony of the International Year of Millets in 2024 will be open to the picture contest’s first-place winner. In accordance with FAO regulations, the winner’s travel costs will be compensated.
  • At the start of December 2023, winners will be revealed on the International Year of Millets website.
  • Winners will be highlighted on partner websites, FAO offices across the world, and social media for the organization.
  • A certificate of recognition and a surprise gift bag will be given to each of the five winners.
  • The prize will be forfeited and FAO will have the sole discretion to decide whether to award it to another eligible entry if any of the selected winner(s) of any prize (who are/are ineligible in accordance with these Contest rules and/or the General Rules, Copyright and Privacy) cannot be found or refuse the prize.
  • Only the first and family name will be published with the winning images. The contestants’ other private information won’t be revealed or shared.

Eligibility

  • Participants must be at least 18 years old.
  • By completing and submitting the registration form, each participant may submit up to five images.Filling out the form separately for each photo is required.
  • Participants must be the only owners of the images and the copyright. The pictures could have been taken after October 1, 2018, for example, but up to five years before the contest’s deadline.
  • Each image must contain a title, a succinct description or caption (maximum of 150 words), describing what the image depicts while taking into account one or more of the factors specified, and the location and time of the photo’s capture.
  • Participants are encouraged to upload their images to social media sites with the hashtags #IYM2023 and #YearofMillets, along with the @FAO tag.
  • JPEG-formatted images must be sent. High-quality images (e.g., 300 dpi and 5000 pixels, with a file size under 2 MB) should be used. Images in color or in black and white will both be accepted.
  • The content cannot violate or infringe on the rights of any third party, including but not limited to those related to copyright, privacy, publicity, and trademarks.
  • There cannot be any dates, texts, brand names, logos, or trademarks in the submission.
  • The IYM Secretariat respects photographers’ rights and makes no claims about ownership of any photographs entered in this competition. Each entry’s entire copyright remains with its author. The creator will be acknowledged every time FAO publishes the image.

Application

  • Step 1: Select up to five of your own images and write captions for them.
  • Step 2: Complete and submit the registration form for each image before October 31, 2023.
  • Step 3: Upload your images to social media and tag @FAO while using the hashtags #IYM2023 and #YearOfMillets.
