Early-career biomedical scientists can build autonomous research projects and African Career Acceleration Fellowships through the Crick Africa Network (CAN), which is funded by LifeArc.

The Crick Africa Network (CAN) is seeking bright, early-career African scientists who can show promise in both science and leadership. They should also have a strong interest in translational science and a dedication to starting their own research groups and pursuing their careers on the African continent.

Eligibility

Applying for the African Career Acceleration Fellowship requires the following qualifications:

  • Citizenship or legal status as a resident of an African nation
  • a clinical PhD (MBChB) with at least three years of relevant research experience, or a Ph.D. in a relevant subject with two to five years of postdoctoral experience
  • A solid track record demonstrating the potential for leadership in science on the continent of Africa
  • a compelling proposal for translational science in one of the CAN study areas
  • Before submitting your scientific proposal, you should have spoken with and come to an understanding with your mentors at the Crick and your chosen African partner institute over the planned science.

  • Every project ought to be capable of being translated. We define translational science as research that has applications in medicine, business, or the environment. In order to bridge the gap between fundamental discovery science and commercial development, it should address a glaring unmet medical need.

Disease etiology and immunogenetics, pathogen genomes or bioinformatics, host-pathogen interactions, diagnostics and biomarkers, pandemic preparedness, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), or medication and vaccine discoveries for development.

  • Before submitting an application, candidates must have found a mentor at their preferred African partner institute and the Crick. Our A-Z list of labs includes the Crick research facilities.
