Established in 2010, the African Union Youth Volunteer Corps (AU YVC) is a premier continental youth leadership initiative that recruits, develops, and places young African professionals from all 55 AU Member States to work as professionals volunteers for a year.

Eligibility requirements


Candidates must fulfill the following requirements:

  1. Resident of the continent or the Diaspora who is a citizen of an AU Member State.
  2. Must be between the ages of 18 and 35 after completing a year of service.
  3. Possess certified postsecondary credentials (TVET, Bachelor’s, Master’s, etc.).
  4. Able to commit 12 (twelve) months of professional voluntary work in 2023 or 2024.
  5. Being open to residing and working in another AU Member State.
  6. Has a working knowledge of at least one of the six official languages of the AU: Arabic, English, French, Portuguese, Swahili, and Spanish.
  7. Has at least a year of professional work experience and a year of verifiable volunteerism.

Necessary skills


Good interpersonal skills, proficiency in one of the official working languages of the AU (French, English, Portuguese, Arabic, Spanish, or Kiswahili), and fluency in another AU language(s) are all advantages. Proficiency in one of the AU officials’ working languages (MS Word, Excel, and Power Point) and fluency in another AU language(s) is an added advantage.

Volunteering Rights


For selected individuals, pre-deployment training and subsequent voluntary deployment will be fully funded by the African Union Commission and its partners.

Application Method


For application submission:

  1. Go to the careers.au.int website and select the AUYVC job.
    Log in if you are already a registered user. If not, register by creating an account.
  2. Finish the application form by entering your personal data.
  3. Include the following files:
    i. A revised professional resume of no more than three pages
    ii. A copy of the bio page from your passport or other government-issued identification; iii. A copy of your highest-level diploma; transcripts are not accepted.
    iv. Include a letter of recommendation attesting to your leadership abilities that is no more than two years old (in the manifesto folder).
  4. Include a cover letter. Please provide your answers to the following queries in your cover letter:
    i. Why do you want to volunteer for the African Union as a young person?
    ii. What qualifies you as the ideal applicant for AUYVC?
    What expertise do you contribute to the AUYVC and your host company?
  5. Go over your application and submit it by Tuesday, September 19, 2023, at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time.
    Please be aware:
    Only successful applicants will be contacted, and providing inaccurate or missing information will result in automatic disqualification (i.e., incomplete and late applications will not be taken into consideration, ii.

Please take note that the African Union does not ever charge or solicit money for processing applications.
