The Human Rights & Religious Freedom (HRRF) Journalism Awards 2023 are now accepting applications. They are searching for excellent narratives that examine the issues of human rights as well as the realities faced by marginalized groups and religious minorities in India.

The tales that exemplify the high standards of reporting are the ones that the award strives to honor. Candidates will be chosen for further consideration based on the significance of their work; as such, their narratives should draw attention to under- and unreported problems, consider novel perspectives on well-known issues, dispel myths, and refute preconceptions about underrepresented groups.

Categories

  • Best Textual Reporting on Religious Freedom and Human Rights
  • The best text reporting (1000 words or more) on under- or unreported human rights and religious freedom issues in India is recognized in this category. Journalists may submit a single article or a collection of articles on the same subject. This honor comes with a plaque and a cash prize of INR 50,000.
  • Best Photographic Documentary on Religious and Human Rights
  • This category honors outstanding feature or breaking news photography on Indian topics pertaining to human rights and religious freedom. Single images cannot be submitted to this category. A piece with a minimum of three and a maximum of ten pictures must be submitted by participants. Captions for the images are required. This honor comes with a plaque and a cash prize of INR 50,000.
  • Best Video on Religious Freedom and Human Rights
  • The finest video report on Indian concerns pertaining to human rights and religious freedom is recognized in this category. The length of the video tale must be 4 to 25 minutes. This honor comes with a plaque and a cash prize of INR 50,000.
  • Award for the Best Young Journalist from HRRF in 2023
  • Religious liberty and human rights A young journalist (30 years of age or under as of July 31, 2023) who has made a significant contribution to Indian journalism in 2022 in support of human rights and religious freedom is given the Young Journalist of the Year Award. Three to five of a journalist’s best stories may be submitted. All types of media are accepted. A plaque and a monetary prize of INR 50,000 are included with this honor.
  • Best Media Organization Award from HRRF
  • This award recognizes independent media outlets (news websites, newspapers, or magazines) that have demonstrated moral, ethical, or physical courage in their efforts to spread the truth. In order to address social, political, cultural, and economic challenges affecting Indian minority and underrepresented communities, the chosen organization must use the media. Submissions are not required for this category. The awards committee will make recommendations and choose news organizations. The virtual award ceremony will include the announcement of the winner. This honor comes with a plaque and a cash prize of INR 100,000. The prize money will be split equally between the winners in the event of a tie.

Eligibility

  • Open to reporters of any country who have covered India’s challenges with human rights and religious freedom.
  • The award is now exclusively open to English-language short tales. However, as long as they are accompanied by English subtitles, video stories submitted in any language are eligible for the award in the video category.
  • Newspapers (local, regional, national, or worldwide), magazines (online and print), or news websites must publish the stories. Personal blogs are not eligible for the award if they post stories.
  • Both single and many authors are allowed for each category.
  • Reports released between March 1, 2022, and July 31, 2023 are welcome.
  • Awards are available to journalists in a variety of areas.
  • A single article or a published series on the same subject or problem may be submitted by journalists.

Judging Standards

All works submitted will be assessed according to their overall quality. In addition to reporting quality, it will also be assessed for investigative effort, informative value, resourcefulness, correctness, and contribution to the general comprehension of the topic under discussion.

Application

All entries must be made through the online entry system. The number of entries a participant submits into each category is unlimited, but each entry must be submitted using a different online entry form.
