DW Akademie is looking for unique ideas for the Journalism in Southern Africa, with a focus on data and AI.

Journalists and newsroom innovators from Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe are encouraged to apply with their ideas for improving their newsrooms through AI and data journalism in order to better serve their audiences.

The next innovation effort will begin in September 2023 with an IdeaLab in Namibia including innovative journalism initiatives from Southern Africa, followed by a practical implementation of the concepts in late 2023.

Requirements

  • You are a member of an established media outlet or a civil society organization that works in journalism and publishes on a regular basis.
  • Your idea and involvement must be approved by your organization.
  • You must be at least 21 years old (or older), have a passport (if you are not from Namibia), and be able to travel to Windhoek, Namibia (travel expenses will be reimbursed).
  • You must reside in one of the following countries: Namibia, Malawi, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, or Lesotho.
  • You must commit to ethical journalism and its rules (such as the Editors Forum of Namibia’s Code of Ethics or the Ethical Journalism Network’s fundamental principles).
