The Smarter Climate Farmers Challenge is looking for new ideas that promote the use of climate-smart agricultural practices by farmers and other individuals involved in the land and food systems. In addition to assisting people in adjusting to the consequences of climate change and encouraging resilient alternatives, these solutions will offer a more secure and sustainable food supply for the present and the future.
The challenge also emphasizes agricultural advances that generate food that replenishes the world, preserves it, and aids in capturing or storing carbon. Both low-tech and high-tech ideas that involve the surrounding community and make use of ancestral or Indigenous methods are welcome.
The challenge’s focal points are as follows:
- Information, expertise, and education
- Sustainability and resource efficiency
- accessible technology
- Creative funding
Selection standards
- Business models include hybrid organizations, for-profit start-ups, social enterprises, and small and mid-sized businesses that have already acquired money or finance and are prepared to generate revenue with a sustainable funding plan.
- Non-profit organizations that have a well-defined, revenue-generating initiative may be taken into consideration.
- Stage: the point at which an idea has progressed beyond the prototype and ideation phases and has shown the ability to scale up and attain long-term financial viability, impact, and sustainability. Typically, UpLink Top Innovators are in the growth/scale phase of their business operations.
- Management team: a devoted, multicultural, and values-driven management group with a track record of success.
- Female leadership: We encourage applications for solutions with female founders, cofounders, or chief executive officers.
- Geographic scope: global submissions that can be scaled up in their own contexts and may be repeatable in other regions of the world.
- Impact on society and economy: Submissions should demonstrate how they will improve livelihoods for farmers and rural communities.
- Environmental impact: Submissions should support biodiversity, soil health and nutrients, trees, and zero-emissions and carbon capture. The relationship between food, water, and energy is also taken into account.
- A fair rural transformation would involve farmers being taken into account and involved across supply networks.
- Partnerships: working together and building a sense of community among local, national, and international stakeholders to grow and expand the solutions and perhaps work with R&D.
- Innovative and unconventional solutions are encouraged, but they must also be repeatable in other difficult contexts or act as a stepping stone for the transformation of food systems while maintaining environmental protection.
- Demonstrate a demonstrable track record of being investable (have previously raised capital, taken part in accelerator programs or fellowships for entrepreneurs, received grants or awards, given prominent speeches, or established partnerships with reliable organizations).
- Applications must explain the solution’s effectiveness in the chosen emphasis areas as well as its present and anticipated effects on the expansion of the business.
- Rewards for a restricted group of top innovators
To be included in the UpLink Innovation Network, a curated program created for founders, CEOs, or executive directors, between 10-15 entries must be chosen as Top Innovators. This network offers:
- Access: Possibility to take part in particular initiatives, projects, and communities led by the World Economic Forum and its partners.
- Global exposure through the digital media outlets of the Forum and UpLink constitutes visibility.
- Connections: strategic introductions to specific Forum and UpLink network organizations.
- Targeted Support: This includes programming and assistance with business, technical, and operational issues.
- Reward: Possession of the right to receive a financial reward from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
