This position is located in the Security and Safety Service (SSS) Vienna, Division for Management (DM), United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV. The Associate Security Officer (Assistant Chief) works under the direct supervision of the Deputy Chief of SSS Vienna.

Within delegated authority, the Associate Security Officer (Assistant Chief) will be responsible for the following specific duties:

• Support the Chief and Deputy Chief of Service in all security-related matters. If required, in the absence of the Chief, the Deputy Chief and the Security Coordination Officer (Assistant Chief), represent and manage the Service.
•Chair and/or organize coordination meetings and/or panels, meetings, briefings, functions, etc. where the Service needs to be represented.
• Perform investigations and fact-finding and/or security assessments and assist with various administrative, human resources and budgetary matters.
• Assist in monitoring the prevailing threat environment, identifying security threats, vulnerabilities, security trends and potential risks, and in formulating and recommending effective preventive countermeasures.
• Assist in the response to crisis events and security incidents through the establishment, implementation, and monitoring of policies and procedures as well as preparing contingency plans for crisis/security/emergency situations.
• Assist in preparing, drafting, editing and reviewing a broad range documents, such as security plans.
• Contribute to the preparation of various written outputs, e.g. background papers, policy review, reports, data inputs, briefing notes, communication outputs etc.
• Assist in the recruitment and training of personnel.
• Supervise security and/or other general staff personnel, manage teams as assigned and conduct performance management.
• Serve as a member of working groups, panels etc. on various matters as assigned.
• Liaise with relevant stakeholders such as UN system organizations, Member States and host country authorities.
• Coordinate various projects internally and with UN system partners as required.
• Provide support to United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) in New York, particularly on reporting requirements.
• Contribute to the collection and analysis of data as well as identification of trends or patterns and provide draft insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods for data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting.

An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in security, administration, business, law, international relations, social sciences or similar area is required.
A first-level university degree and no experience will be accepted for candidates who have passed the United Nations Young Professional Programme Examination (YPP), the United Nations National Competitive Recruitment Examination (NCRE) or the General Service to Professional Examination (G to P).Work Experience

A minimum of two years of progressively responsible professional experience in security and safety operations, administration, project or programme management, international relations or similar area is required.

No experience is required for candidates who have passed the United Nations Young Professionals Programme Examination (YPP) or the G to P Examination (G to P).

Supervising experience is desirable.

Experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.

Experience working with security and safety services within the United Nations System or other similar international organization is desirable.Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another United Nations official language is an advantage. Knowledge of German is desirable.Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise and a competency-based interview.
