The Moses Mapesa Education and Research Grant is being offered by the African World resources Fund (AWHF) to assist African doctoral and masters students studying natural and cultural resources.

In order to assist African State Parties in implementing the 1972 UNESCO Convention for the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage (World Heritage Convention), the AWHF was established in South Africa in 2006.

The Fund established an annual application for the Moses Mapesa Educational Research Grant to support young heritage professionals conducting Masters and Doctoral research in the area of natural and cultural assets in Africa. This grant aims to further research (especially by funding fieldwork) on concerns related to the preservation, management, and sustainability of African World Heritage Sites and other Sites on Tentative Lists.

Topics

The grant will support studies on the following subjects in relation to African World Heritage or tentatively designated sites:

  • Traditions in conflict and post-conflict circumstances; risk management and readiness; traditional management systems;
  • preserving and managing cultural heritage;
  • climate change and heritage;
  • economics/entrepreneurship and cultural heritage;
  • sustainable development and cultural heritage;
  • promotion and awareness of heritage;
  • Digital technologies and cultural heritage
  • History and the law.

Benefits

  • Depending on the study ideas, grants will range in size, with a $5,000 ($5,000.00) cap on awards. The contract must be signed and the fieldwork research completed within nine months (May 2024 to February 2025).

Eligibility requirements

The following students are eligible to apply:

  • Fluency in English, French, or Portuguese; Citizens of an African Union Member State that is a Party to the World Heritage Convention; Currently enrolled in or will be enrolled in a Doctoral or Masters program (Masters 2 for Francophone countries) at an African university and conducting dissertation research in the field of either natural or cultural heritage at an African World Heritage Site.

The applicant’s qualification;

  • Complete application materials, including the application form, resume, letter of motivation, transcript, and full research proposal; High caliber and relevance of the proposed study;
  • balance among gender, language, and geography.
  • Candidates that are selected will be notified in December 2023.
