The Get Up, Rise Up direct action fund’s mission is to assist activists throughout the world in reshaping society by calculated, nonviolent direct actions that promote social and ecological justice, health, and equity for all. The fund also seeks to advance strategic nonviolent direct action theories, concepts, methods, and tactics, drawing on frontline experience and adding these to the broader body of social movement knowledge.

The objective is to provide your campaign with simplified micro-doses of resources so that you can concentrate on what you do best—organize, educate, and cause beautiful, inspiring trouble!

Donation Amount

Grants might be between $250 and $1000. In incredibly extreme cases, they might take grants over $1,000 into consideration.

Regional context

  • Applicants from the African continent will be given preference. However, funds are available for any and all geographical areas with restricted resource access and opportunity to teach certain lessons to the larger movement or activist group.
  • They support direct actions and their associated tools.
  • Funding requests must be made for one of the following:
  • Simple action: Direct action is fundamentally about power. Effective direct action analyzes power dynamics and determines how to change them. The use of inventive acts will be given preference.
  • A physical, digital, or skill-based item (such as equipment, software, or training) that is necessary to enable a successful direct action. Such instruments must be unmistakably connected to a direct action that will happen within a fair amount of time after they are made available.

Who ought to apply?

  • Established groups (formal or informal), as well as occasionally individuals, who have been working on a particular topic or cause and are looking for money for a direct action or a direct action tool as part of an ongoing campaign, are welcome to apply.
  • The fund’s emphasis is very much on underserved and under-resourced neighborhoods and populations. They do not require groups to be fully registered since they actively want to encourage informal movements and recognize that it might be challenging for such organizations to establish formal and/or legal structures.
  • They give communities or locations with limited resources priority.
  • Constituencies or issue areas with low funding levels are highly encouraged to apply.
