For the Global Media Defence Fund 2023, proposals are requested. UNESCO invites non-profit groups to submit suggestions that will improve the legal protection of journalists. And advance media freedom through strategic litigation or investigative reporting.

Over $1 million in financial awards will be distributed through the Global Media Defence Fund’s (GMDF) 4th Call for Partnerships to assist the start-up or growth of local, regional, and global organizations.

By advancing at least one of the following GMDF Outputs. These projects, in accordance with international human rights standards, should help to improve media freedom and boost journalists’ legal protection:
  • Output 2: Strengthening the operationalization of national protection systems and peer support networks to enable journalists have quick access to legal counsel, boost their defense, and improve their safety while taking into account the threats’ gendered aspect;
  • Output 3: Supporting investigative journalism that works to reduce impunity for crimes against journalists by holding the justice system responsible and by pursuing inquiries that run the risk of being censored when journalists are assaulted, detained, or killed; as well as improving the safety of those who work in this field;
  • Output 4: Improving the frameworks for encouraging strategic litigation to safeguard the legal conditions that support an independent, free, and pluralistic media ecosystem.

Grant

The monetary grants granted through this Call shall have a minimum USD value of $15,000 and a maximum USD value of $35,000.

Eligibility

  • Open to specialized not-for-profit groups such NGOs, media associations, journalists’ unions, human rights advocates, legal assistance organizations that provide pro bono services, networks for attorneys and investigative journalists, foundations, and educational institutions.
  • The requirements outlined in the Terms of Reference for the Call must be met by eligible organizations and they must have been operational and registered for at least two years.

Application

The suggestions must be submitted no later than August 28, 2023, 23:59 GMT+2.

Partnership proposals must be sent to gmdf@unesco.org via email exclusively, along with any necessary forms and other materials.
