The AFIDEP Emerging Health Technologies Media Award of Excellence 2023 is now accepting applications. The EHTs Media Award’s goals are to support high-quality reporting on emerging health technologies being created for use in Africa as well as to increase local ownership of these technologies and public understanding and participation in their development.

The award is focused on cutting-edge medical innovations that the African Union has identified as having the greatest potential to alter the course of disease and health in Africa. Drones, microgrids, artificial intelligence, gene editing, and next-generation medicine are among the technologies mentioned. Gene drives and monoclonal antibodies for the prevention of malaria are also included.
Categories
These are the categories:
- Print journalism: A 700–1,500 word feature or piece that is published in a newspaper, magazine, journal, or newsletter.
- Radio journalism: A five to forty-five minute conversation or documentary show.
- Journalism for television: A five to forty-five minute documentary or discussion program.
- Online/new media: 700–1,500 word feature articles, 5–45 minute audio–visual documentaries, or debate programs. An online-only newspaper, magazine, journal, or media outlet must publish this.

- Grand Prize for the EHTs Media Award: USD $5,000
- Print Category EHTs Media Award: USD $2,500; Runner-up USD $1,000
- Radio Category EHTs Media Award: USD $2,500; Runner-up USD $1,000
- Television Category EHTs Media Award: USD $2,500; Runner-up USD $1,000
- Online Category of the EHTs Media Award: US$2,500; US$1,000 Runner-Up
Eligibility
- Open to African journalists who publish in media organizations with an African leadership and base.
- Print, radio, television, and online media publications and broadcasts are all acceptable.
- For this call, media stories that were published between November 1, 2022, and August 30, 2023 are the period of publication/broadcast for entries.
- The entries should cover African-specific EHT development concerns, such as existing research, the regulatory frameworks required to direct this effort, community involvement, public awareness and understanding, the participation of African scientists, and equity and benefit sharing. Stories may focus on regional issues or ones that are specific to one African nation.
- English or French must be used for all entries. The original language of stories written in regional tongues should be noted along with the translation.
Application
Journalists are urged to share the following when submitting entries:
- For online entries, a link to the article or program that was published
- for entries in the Print Category, a PDF attachment
- copies of the radio or TV programs with the date and time the program aired.
- a copy of your ID
- Files submitted shouldn’t be more than 15MB.
