For the “African Union, Leveraging Arts for Peace” – Training on Silencing the Guns 2023, applications are being accepted. The Political Affairs, Peace and Security Department (PAPS), in conjunction with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), will hold the first series of virtual trainings for African artists on “leveraging Arts for Peace” from August 14 to August 18, 2023, as a follow-up to the December 2021 Accra Seminar. This training will be informed by the outcomes of the Accra meeting and built on the premise that art can help resolve conflicts.
The training will cover subjects like the role of artists in promoting peace advocacy through the arts, an overview of gun control, the work done by AU to advance peace and security, conflict prevention, and support for post-conflict reconstruction, as well as guidelines for effective advocacy and outreach, among other things.
Objectives
In preparation for Africa Amnesty Month, which is commemorated each September, the training is being offered to encourage African citizens to turn in any small arms and light weapons they may be in possession of unlawfully to the appropriate authorities. It targets African artists from all parts of the continent, including the North, West, Central, East, and Southern. The program will educate the artists on the dangers of using their work to stir up conflict, encourage hate speech or other types of violence.
In particular, the training hopes to provide the artists the ability to:
- Raise the level of public awareness and concern about putting a stop to gun violence;
- In order to achieve a conflict-free Africa and create favorable conditions for the continent’s socioeconomic transition, mobilize African citizens and other stakeholders to support the global movement to banish guns;
- increase awareness of the spread of illegal small arms and light weapons and the harm that these weapons do to Africa;
- Encourage anyone living in Africa who are in possession of illegal weapons to turn them in to the appropriate authorities in exchange for amnesty.

Applications from experienced artists who fit the following selection criteria, especially those from young women artists, displaced people, and people with disabilities, are especially encouraged:
