African media practitioners enthusiastic in promoting development-focused stories using emerging technology in various media formats are invited to apply for the African Union Media Fellowship Programme for 2023–2024.

The African Union (AU) Information and Communication Directorate (ICD) launched the AU Media Fellowship as a transformative platform to shape the African story and create a more accurate representation of Africa’s progress and opportunities using the use of emerging digital technologies as a key tool for communication and engagement that will enable the continent to achieve the vision and aspirations of Africa’s Agenda 2063.

Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), acting on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), is providing funding for the AU Media Fellowship project.

Goals of the AU Media Fellowship Program Development of Skills


  • The AU Media Fellowship (AUMF) offers a structured setting for developing knowledge, skills, and storytelling abilities through instruction, mentoring, and practical experiences.
  • Participants can hone their journalistic storytelling skills, pick up new tricks, and develop proficiency in utilizing emerging technologies and digital media platforms.

Key Exercises

The 12-month Fellowship program is set to start in August 2023.

  • August – December 2023: After being officially chosen and admitted to the program, Fellows will participate in virtual on-boarding training, induction workshops, and their first study tour. The Fellows are expected to concentrate on their pitch stories during this time, as well as take part in required online certified trainings (Self-selection) and master workshops led by professionals in the field.
  • January through March 2024: Fellows will take part in the second study trip, get in-person instruction and one-on-one mentoring, as well as be required to complete online certification training (Self-selection) and master classes from professionals in their field. Fellows will also be given an invitation to the Annual African Union Summit in February 2024, where they will have a special opportunity to interact with senior African leaders and invited guests.
  • Fellows will travel on their final study trip from April to June 2024 while still receiving training and best practice workshops.
  • Fellows will tell their last tales in July 2024, receive awards, and take part in closing ceremonies and sessions.
