The Environmental Photographer of the Year Competition 2023 is now accepting applications. The Environmental Photographer of the Year competition, now in its 16th year, features the most motivational environmental photography from all over the world. The award recognizes the resilience and inventiveness of humanity, and it presents images that make us consider our influence and motivate us to live sustainably.

The Environmental Photographer of the Year competition supports the UN Sustainable Development Goals’ urgent calls to action by recognizing the intricate interconnections between development, poverty reduction, equality, security, and climate action as well as the unprecedented effort from all spheres of society needed to address these contemporary issues.

Prizes: Restoring Nature Preserving 1.5 Alive Adapting for Tomorrow

Environmental Photographer of the Year: The top prize will be given to a single image that enhances public awareness of the causes and consequences of environmental change and social inequality, draws attention to potential solutions to the ecological and climate crises, and motivates us to live sustainably. Professional and amateur photographers of all ages from around the world are welcome to enter this category. Along with a £5,000 cash award, the winner will also have a feature on WaterBear’s website, an interview in CIWEM’s Environment Magazine, and an article on Nikon Europe’s website.
Young Environmental Photographer of the Year: In collaboration with Nikon, this prize honors the top environmental images captured by young photographers (those who are 21 years old or younger). Photographers under the age of 21 are eligible for this category, which honors emerging talent. The prize includes two NIKKOR Z lenses of the winner’s choice, a Z Series Mirrorless camera, an interview in CIWEM’s Environment Magazine, and a piece on the Waterbear and Nikon platforms.

Professional and amateur photographers of all ages from throughout the world are eligible for the Environmental Photographer of the Year category.
Photographers under the age of 21 are eligible for the Young Environmental Photographer of the Year award.
You may submit previously published images, but you must not submit images that have already won or garnered attention in a major international photography contest.

Up until August 30th, the 2023 competition is open. By the end of October, you will hear from us with more information about the following steps if any of your photos are chosen for publication. In November, the winners and finalists will be revealed.
