Every area of contemporary life is being impacted by climate change, which includes diminishing agricultural output, rising sea levels, drought, forest fires, and catastrophic flooding. Governments have a responsibility to permit and promote participation from citizens, civil society, activists, and others in the development and implementation of climate policy in order to address the climate problem. Governments can develop climate-focused policies that are just and attentive to community needs through increasing public involvement and including underrepresented voices in decision-making. A new cohort of innovators interested in launching participatory programs to shape climate policy in the areas of clean transportation, renewable energy, decarbonization and energy-efficient homes, air pollution, agroecology, and more is being sought after by People Powered.

Benefits

In addition to having access to a committed mentor to help them build their program, those who are chosen will also receive:

  • Detailed resources for planning participatory programs, such as the Participation Playbook, an interactive web tool.
  • live workshops and online courses that emphasize practice.
  • a $10,000 award for implementation.
  • The chance to submit an application for a $20,000 prize for the best idea created by program participants.

Eligibility

Applications from businesses or governments situated in Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa, Asia, and Eastern Europe are especially invited. Members of the Open Government Partnership or People Powered will also receive priority.

  • Officials, employees, and policymakers from local governments who desire to start a participatory program for simply climate-related decisions. Recall that the grant recipient must be a non-governmental entity, thus if a government organization submits the application, they must do so in cooperation with one.
  • Staff members of civil society organizations and/or climate activists who want to engage with a government institution to develop a participative program with a focus on climate. It should be noted that if a civil society organization submits an application, they must do so in collaboration with a government agency because they are responsible for monitoring the action plan’s execution.

Expectations

Four cohorts of 15 executives from the public and private sectors will participate in this program, which will begin in September 2023 and go through July 2025. For the initial cohort:

  • From September through March 2024, participants can anticipate investing an average of two hours per week.
  • The CDA program will accept additional applications the next year if you are unsure about your availability for the program or if you are not chosen this time.
  • The program’s live sessions will require participants to reserve a few important days on their calendars.

Various other expectations are:

  • Create a project or action plan that will be carried out with the aid of program resources.
  • Develop an action plan with the involvement of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Attend and take part in talks and activities devoted to mentoring and peer assistance.
  • Update on project development and learnings.

Application

Application-related queries include:

  • Do you and your partner organization have a written partnership/support agreement, such as a memorandum of understanding (MoU)?
  • A documented agreement between your school or organization and the collaborating organization for the work you will be developing in this program (such as a letter of support, interest, or MoU) should be uploaded.
  • Describe the participatory program that you and your partner group want to develop and put into place to influence climate policy.
  • Which kind of participation program would you like to create an action plan for?
  • Give an example of your work with local governments or civil society organizations on environmental planning or policy that addresses climate change through participatory or deliberative processes. (1,250 characters maximum)
  • How have you previously worked with marginalized or excluded communities?
  • What are the toughest problems you want to solve? Give an example of the issue or subject that your plan or policy will address while making explicit the context of climate change.
  • How will this procedure promote climate equity and/or a just transition? Climate equity can relate to the allocation of costs, risks, or damages either from climate change itself OR from the policies implemented to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions or adapt to it.
  • What kind of assistance is required for you to accomplish your goals?
  • What goals do you have for taking part in the CDA program? Describe how the award will help your organization achieve the objectives of your action plan. Be as detailed as you can.
